bullets for the .404 Jeffery
I was back @ the range Sun. & the .404 is shooting very sweet indeed. I thought I would test a few bullets & see what I would get. Impact vel. was approx. 2100fps:

The left is the 380grNF, recovered weight of 377gr w/ 20" of penetration in the wet phone books. Center is the 400gr Woodleigh, 391gr w/ 21" penetration & the 400gr Hawk on the right. This bullet actually lost the core & the total weight was 328gr after 14 1/2" penetration. All bullets expanded over .80cal. I don't think I would use the Hawk for anything but antelope, the other two are buffalo medecine for sure.

Nice photos. What was the jacket thickness on the Hawks?
I have had excellent results on deer and wild pigs with 300gr .025jkt in my 450/400, and with 285gr .035jkt in my 9,3x74R.

Thanks for the pics !! Norfolks can't be had in Oz...so it will be woodleigh's for me. The hawk would make a great pig bullet for sure I would think.

The 400gr Hawk is the .050 jacket. The core just squirted out so I think I would stay w/ the Woodleigh & NF for the really big stuff.

Fred I agree with the Woodleigh and North Fork for the big stuff. I like the Hawks for great expansion on deer sized game with a big bore. I think it would be a good bullet for shooting a leopard out of a tree. I would use a W, or a NF on the follow up uncase I hit the head or jaw bones on a charge.
