458 Winchester Magnum vs 458 Lott
Thanks to all new, I have a 458 Lott, as you know because I have not bothered much with the subject. In Spain I have no record that is marketed Ackeley 458 or 450 Watts, it is true that arrives in the cartridge 450 Ceska Rigby, but I discovered later. I know that the 458 Lott has its limitations but sometimes I think there is a "witch burning" with this cartridge. regards,

Oscar.

Robgunbuilder wrote, "I've repeatedly ( over 10 years here on AR in fact) talked about the fact that with long throated guns you can load the .458 win mag to literally equal a FACTORY LOTT."

The throat is long enough. It's just that the magazine isn't sometimes.

I just noticed in the 2011 Midway USA catalog that they are selling a magazine box for $31.00 that lets you use 3.850 COAL cartridges in a Model 70. That eliminates any difference between the Winchester and Lott.

With the 458Win I know I will never be able to fire 500grn bullets at neck braking speeds let alone 550grn bullets. But I sure do enjoy hunting with my comfortably balanced and weighted 458Win using 480grn bullets fired at the classic 450NE velocity's that have proven them selves on dangerous game for over a hundred years.
This combination producing great penetration and hopefully all the knock down power I will ever require. All that with no excessive pressure sign or bullet failure.
Hopefully NORMA will some day add these Woodleigh 480grn 458Win loads to their range.

My experience with both .458 WM and Lott is a bruised shoulder and I cannot tell the physical difference on non-dangerous game. I assume that the Lott hits harder but dead is dead so I have opted for the WM.

You are right, I opted for the 458 Lott, but I realize that if you already have a 458 Winchester Magnum is not worth changing for Lott. Really enjoy your 458 Winchester Magnum rifles as it really is a classic with modern powders and bullets now feature a performance very different from those in his day gave him a bad name.

Ozhunter, great boar, my congratulations. Let's see if I can I release my 458 Lott.

Greetings to all,

Oscar.

The question is a bit absurd, but never hurts to drag out the AR physics experts. Smiler

Ain't it the truth!

But the bolt throw is longer, wait the Lott is the same as an 375 H&H, I am so confused....

Many years ago I went Water Buff hunting in the Coburn Penninsula of OZ. It was a 10 day all day walking hunt and knowing that I built a really nice long throat .458 win mag on a M98 ( VZ24) action( mag box adjusted with a dremel and welder) with a synthetic stock and a pre-threaded and headspaced barrel from brownells in .458win mag. A timney trigger and some lathe time and sights and I was in buisness. Total cost about $300. Weighed 8 lbs when completed and shot 1"groups at 100 yrds. Took a nice water Buff and a Banteng on that trip and walked my ass off. Literally the perfect gun for a walking Safari. That gun was light and easy to carry and I couldn't care less if it got banged up. Gave it to the PH as a parting gift. He's probably still using it. -Rob

Rob I have realized that the 458 Winchester Magnum lost its popularity due to the poor choice of powder at a certain time, and some bullets that really were not monolithic and as a result there were numerous accidents, some with tragic results. Today with the bullets and powders that are in the market, the Winchester cartridge is hundred percent reliable.

If the Lott didn't beat out the Win Mag, I don't believe the Lott would have ever been made after the Win Mag.
