I was down in the reloading room when my son and daughter came down. They informed me that a porkupine was was one of the trees in the yard. Being a dog and timber land owner they are not my favorite critters to have around.

My daughter said she wanted to shoot it I said here use this holding up a 300 gr 416 taylor round. So out the door we go she saids does it kick much. I told her to hold it tight and not creep up on the scope.

We get about 30 yards from the varmit she takes a nice rest on a nearby tree and lets drive. Needless to say the varmit came out of the tree fairly fast.She then turns to me and says the recoil wasn't bad at all.

Fun was had by all. Maybe she'll want to use it deer hunting her regular deer gun is a TC carbine in 357 max. Most likely she well not want to lug 10lbs around when she can carry her 5lb TC.

So guys was the 416 to big or just right.

How was the porkypine?

Sounds like she was severely undergunned; only the fact that she placed a very accurate first shot enabled her to bonk that porkie without a follow up shot (or maybe the fall from the tree did him in) - you did check for a bullet hole in that critter, right?

Sounds like your daughter is a GREAT kid...

What it was was the porky was male,,, saw a female with a gun.... the gun went off.... and since he knows females shoot better than males, figured he might as well JUMP!!! LOL

She is a great kid at 18 she has about 14 deer under belt and one bear. She is also a very good shot with rifles and pistols her shotguning neads some work. We were out to the hunting camp one day and I watched her run 6 pop cans in a row of hand with her 38 at 25 yards. You don't want her shooting at you thats for sure.

Yes I did check for a bullet hole the pine was faceing away from her it was all most a texas heart shot. the bullet entering the left rear coming out the right front shoulder 416 dia entry hole about a .5 in exit. Was a texas heart shot ok I know some of you well never take them but I thought with the 416 and a 20 lb critter we had enough gun for it.

Because I was useing reformed 429 pistol bullets I thought that it might just come apart at rifle vel. But in my testing some far they seem to hold to gather.

I hope you were backing her up with something!! Hate to see you have to crawl into the woods after a wounded porky, you got luck sir, damned lucky

Only barely! I would seriously consider something a tad larger and more trauma inducing if you intend to continue hunting porcupines! Only speaking from first hand experience.

Porky can be a very tough critter. Shooting with such a small bore could put you and your daughter in harms way. Good thing she made a good shot!
