I want to put a scope on my Marlin 1895G .45-70. Is there any reason I cannot put a 4x40 or a 3-9x40 conventional scope on it? Versus one of those scopes that mounts more forward. Thank you

Not at all...that's how I scope up leverguns, and the modern ones are drilled and tapped on the receiver for scopemounts.

On one of my Guide Guns customized by Grizzly Custom Guns in Columbia Falls, Montana, I mount a Burris Eurodiamond 1-4x30 mm with German 4-Plex reticle, using Warne Steel Low Q-D mount and rings, with Marble tang sight with Brockman W&E adjustable wing-protected steel front as alternate. The Eurodiamond I have has been discontinued, I believe. It is still available used. The scope is small, liftetime guarantee sturdy, made in USA. It takes full advantage of the Guide Gun with my 325-grain Flex Tip ammunition or 420-grain WFN-GCs. It is probably the best telescopic sight presently available for under $400 that can be mounted on this class of rifle. Sturdy, low, small, excellent reticle that can be locked in position once zeroed, with high visibility factor in dim light.

Leupold 2.5x ultralight with a heavy duplex fits quite nicely on my Guide Gun in talley mounts.

You can, but it might have the handling qualities of a fence post if you do. For me the Leupold 2 x 7x 33 in the normal configuration gives a great scope and does not disturb the handling qualities of the gun.
Forward mounting is only a solution to Winchester designs in my book.

I have a Leupold FX II 2.5 on mine. It's light, compact and doesn't mess up the balance. It's also about all the power you need for a .45-70 in my opinion.

The FXII 2.5x is a standard eye relief, although they do offer an IER version, also. (sorry about the poor quality photos...)

That's the one I use and it balances well on the gun. The optics are good enough you do not need the higher magnification. Set it on 2x or 3x and you are good.

I have a "short tube" version of the Leupold 1.75 X 6 VX III that was manufactured a few years back for a short period. Fits, looks and works great!

I have a NIB Leupold 2.5 Matte Compact with Heavy Duplex..Looking eye relief (5" approx) for the "Kick" that 45/70 is capable of! Its in the classifieds Got Rings too..

Has a 1x4 Leupold VX 2, I like the combination very well.

Look at the Williams Ace in the Hole rail. It allows you to max out the eye relief on your conventionally mounted scope on the Marlin.

Mine has a straight 4x....works great.
