I have one; 500grains has two of them. We like the round.

Use the search feature and look for references to '.470 Capstick'. There have been several good discussions.

I have 2 rifles in this cartridge and I like it.

Pro: 470 cap is the biggest thing you can fit in a model 98 mauser without MAJOR re-working of the action (then you can fit 500 jeffery).

Pro: You can use 470 nitro bullets in the 470 cap but push them faster.

Pro: 470 cap is an inherently accurate cartridge. I have NOT found the same with the Lott.

Con: It is way easier to find some 458 lott or 458 win mag in Africa than 470 cap.

Con: Resale will be higher with a 458 lott.

Con: At the shooting range when people ask what it is, you have to explain it to them.

I have a Capstick. I like it very much. It can be very flexible with the availability of the new bullets for the .480 Ruger. You can load down for north american game or use it full power for "the hammer of Thor".

I have a brand new CZ550 375 H&H.Could I just rebarrel it to 470 Capstick without any other alterations? If not, what other modifications would be needed? I was considering buying a CZ in 458 Lott, but if the Capstick is a superior round I would rather have that. I'm not worried about availability of ammo overseas.

Capstick,
much like me (500-jeffe) your handle will get your wallet (LOL)

yes, any good smith can rebarrel... you'll need a big bore specialist to do the barrel mounted recoil lug and bedding.

The .470 Capstick is slightly 'superior' in that it has a larger diameter, and can drive 500gr. bullets slightly faster than a .458 Lott can. However, its bullets will have slightly lower sectional density compared to .458 bullets of the same weight.

The buff in my photo was killed with the .470 Capstick in the photo (with an assist from my .375H&H).

The buff definitely exhibited a greater reaction to the hits from the .470.

You can find a thread about the elephant penetration test and a pic of the bullet on the african hunting forum.
