Twist for 500A2, 500Jeffery and 500NE
What are the recomended twist rates for the .510 calliber barrels? Can I get a Lothar-Walter barrel made for 500NE and chamber it for 500 jeffe och 500A2 or will the twist be wrong? Bullets will be 500-600 grain.

Thanks

Thomas,
my 500jeffe is 1x18... which is fairly slow.... it shoots 500, 535, 600, and 740's jsut fine.... at 2200-2400....

in fact, I believe that if you stay under 700, a 1-22 is enough twist

The 50 BMG seems to use a 1:15" twist rate. My 500 Jeffery used a 1:12" twist rate. The faster twist is said to help stabilize bullets during penetration of animals, and this is why I opted for the faster twist. My rifle, a M700, had good accuracy with 1.5" groups at 100 yards being the norm. Some feel that the faster twist
'over- stabilizes' the lighter bullets giving poor accuracy, but I dont' believe this to be true.

The 1 in 15" twist of the 50 BMG's must be the one to use for 700 to 800 grain target bullets at 2700+ fps.

Those same bullets can be fired at 2200 to 2300 fps from a 500 A-Square with a portable contour and length of barrel.

The slower velocity needs a faster twist for target accuracy.

I have had excellent results with two 500 A-Square rifles, one throated short and one throated long, using 1 in 10" twist barrels.

I believe the SSK 50 Peacekeeper and the 500 A-Square by A-Square use 10" twist barrels.

As Kent said, the faster twist barrel might give better penetration with the lighter hunting bullets. I have good accuracy with 570 grain Barnes XLC's in a 10" twist at 2400+ fps.
