Group , will some one refresh my fading memory,I have a chance to pick up a Ruger No-1 in 404, wasn't there a problem with them?

500grainsThere are a handful of different specifications for the .404, just like for the .500 Jeff. Apparently Ruger had a chamber reamer made to one specification but was using dies made to another specification. Since Ruger is not populated by the brightest bulbs, after a while they decided there was a headspace problem and decided that the .416 rigby was just the ticket.

HunterJimI interviewed two executives involved from Ruger and their official position for cancelliing the No. 1 and M77 .404 rifles was "ammunition incompatabilities".
The collectors have elevated the price on the No. 1 rifles in .404 Jeff too.
If you get a decent price, you would still have to plan on ensuring the rifle can shoot your ammo (new Federal stuff?).

AtkinsonThe problem was with the 77s, the No. 1s have all been Ok and shoot all the available factory ammo it appears...all you have to do then is set your reloading die correctly.
Ruger didn't have their ducks in a row and got a lot of pretty dumb advise on the .404 specs. so none of the factory brass would fit it...they used old original specs as opposed to todays ammo specs from Norma, Bell clymer etc. The bean counters at their best.
