John GaltAnyone shoot the Cast Performance bullets out of your Lott?
Hello All,
Just curious if you have any experience shooting the Cast Performance brand bullets out of your .458 Lott. I was looking at the weights they show and sure wish they had some 500 grainers! Figured I may try some 460's just for the heck of it. Can anyone suggest a good source for other .458 hard cast bullets that have proved effective and accurate? Looking to load up some plinking ammo for my RSM.
Thanks in advance,
John

analog_peninsulaI used the .511 525 gr bullet at about 17-1800 fps. There was definitely some leading, but it shot well enough for practice. At the end of the day, I was willing to put up with a little extra cleaning to get less expensive plinking ammo.

GrandpasezI shoot 640 gr cast in my 585HE. Guy made then
from hard alloy and heat treated them.
They are as hard as jacketed and can go
2900-3000 fps with no leading Cost a
quarter of what jacketed costs. Ed

LionHunterLeading is to be avoided in rifles. It is bad enough to deal with in handguns; you don't want to deal with it in a 26" bbl, especially a large bore. JMO.

K EvansI've used their .459 diameter, 405 grain bullets in my .458 Lott using Trail Boss powder and they shoot pretty well...sometimes they don't feed well in my rifle if the seating depth is too short.

John GaltThanks all- may just stick with jacketed bullets and avoid the potential for leading issues...

N E 450 No2If you are looking for a more inexpensive bullet to shoot in a .458 bore rifle try to buy some of the Remington 405 gr bullets in bulk.

K EvansJohn: Another inexpensive alternative is to shoot Berry's copper plated bullets. I use these as well, loading them to around 2800 fps, no leading and absolutely devastating to any sort of liquid filled container (sometimes won't exit a water filled metal one gallon paint can at close range...just blows the lid sky high and turns the can into a flat piece of tin). Pretty accurate and no leading, but feeding can be problematic.

SR4759I have shot thousands of 45 and 40 caliber cast bullets with no leading - more than enough to pay for several rifles at todays component prices.
They don't really need to be ultra hard if they are about .002" over grove diameter and have a gas check.
