Suggestions for a Mark X mauser

I have one in 458 Win coming in. Any suggestions for what needs to be done to it? I'm thinking about some lyman sights, and probably a limbsaver pad. Are they reliable enough for DG use? Anything critical to do to them?

They're a great foundation! Glass bed it and cross bolt it first thinks first. I have a Mark X in .458 win mag and in short order broke the stock -- so do this first!

On my Mark X .375, we replaced the factory stock with a McMillan (with Decelerator) and bedded it, but I have a Whitworth stock to put on it now. We replaced the rear sight blade in the Williams rear sight with a shallow "V" style. The scope bases mounting screws were drilled/tapped to 8x40 and we put on Talley bases. The trigger was made crisp but not too light. We replaced the safety with a 2-position Model 70 style.

I added a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20mm in Talley QD rings.

The extractor was modified to allow single feeding (not from the magazine) in emergencies.

Be sure to see if it feeds with the bullet style you want to use.

I had most of the same done to my Whitworth .458, except the sights did not need changing and the stock was retained but bedded and repaired where it was cracked. I added a red Decelerator as well.

Charles,

How do you like that McMillan stock? would you say thay the comb is low enough to allow easy use of the irons, but not too low that you have to lift your head for the scope? Or is it mainly set up for easy scope use. I'm looking at one for an FN browning, and they would use that pattern.

It works okay for the irons, and is not that different from the Whitworth. More drop would make the irons easier, but I am able to use both okay.

As mentioned above, I prefer walnut and will be replacing it with a Whitworth take-off when I get around to taking it to the gunsmith for bedding, etc. I wanted a stock pretty quickly when I bought the rifle and the McMillan seemed to be the quick solution. It did need some work to fit the barreled action.
