Herter's 458 WM
Any idea who made the Herters" 458's?
The owner says it's English, and thinks it might be BSA. He can't find anything better on the receiver. And it doesn't look like the Whitworth I used to have. Thanks

Herters sold two rifles.....one was a J-9 and the other was a U-9 and one was from BSA and the other was a Mauser from either FN or Zastava.

The difference is clear.....hard to not tell which is which as they didn't resemble each other at all. The Mauser looks very much like a Mauser.....

It sounds like yours is a U-9. I have a J-9 that was originally 7 M/M RemMag and is now a .458 WinMag. Mine is obviously a Zastava Mauser made when the Yugo's took more pride in fit and finish. The U-9 is definately a BSA and should be a pretty good action/rifle. I wish, back when there was no law against mail order firearms and the J-9's were $86 each that I had bought 20-30 of them. Should'a, could'a, would'a!
