.458 Win Mag
Maybe I should put this in "for sale" but I don't have anything for sale.

However, while walking through a local gun store today I saw what I thought was a really good bargain on a .458 Win Mag. and I know there are people on this particular forum that are looking for one.

This was an Interarms Mark X that has Virginia and Manchester marked on it. It has the old style Mag box. The action and box have been professionally polished and blued. There is a custom .458 Win Mag barrel on it. That has also been expertly blued and the caliber engraved on. There is also a 3 position safety installed, beautifully polished and blued. And the stock is a very nice piece of walnut. I would not say exhibition grade, abut plenty of figure. This was a custom job by somebody who knew what they were doing. The inletting is really good, and the checkering Is on par with guns I have seen costing in the thousands of dollars. Even conservatively I would guess with materials and labor this gun has had at least $2500 put into it.

And it was for sale for $900 plus tax. I don't believe in killing Elephants or I would have bought it on the spot just because it jumps out at a person as being a finely crafted firearm at a very good price.

Anyone looking for a .458?

Such a bargain, and from your previous posts, you're looking for one. Your religion regarding elephants has nothing to do with the rifle. You have my permission to purchase it.

I don't plan on or want to kill an elephant, rino, hippo, ect, ect, but I have a 458 Win mag and a couple of .375 H&H rifles just for fun. I know one guy who uses a 458 for E. Texas whitetails and wild hogs, loaded down to hotter 45-70 levels and thinks it's the thing.

The Big Bores are fun to shoot and I have shot Nutria with a 458 and of course hogs...I also have shot 2 Big Boar with my .600 Overkill! Just drilled a hole right through, not as devastating as say a 300 Mag with 150s,those literally explode the shoulder!
You will also find the 458 is usually very accurate at 100 yds..I have had many shoot well under a inch! tu2

Id say the majority of bigbore purchases never make it to Africa. In Australia due to the number of disposable game you see quite a few 375H&H level and above cartridges used. Or guys just buying to shoot rocks and old TV's. If you like the gun, buy it.

Sounds like a good buy, Im pretty sure you could double your money a time or two on it if as is described..The .458 would make you a good Cape Buffalo gun..its a DG caliber with a decent reputation..Ive shot deer and PG with it and it actually destroys less meat than a 243, 270 or lesser magnum for that matter..usually cuts a fairly clean hole the size of a broom handle unless you hit heavy bone.

I shoot a lot of wild boar with a 470NE double rifle and like others here have said, it punches a clean hole right through with very little meat damage like the 458 win mag with full 500 gr bullet loads.

I find most bigger bore rifle do far less damage to the meat that small FAST bullets.

As far as the shooting of elephant the only reason I haven't shot one is I can't afford it! For the price of a trophy bull elephant hunt I can take two or three cape buffalo, and the trophy is less important to me than the extra hunting I can do for buffalo.
