m70 375- how to know if needs new extractor?
Hey guys, have read a couple of time sthat guys replace the extractor on their m70's and was wondering how you can tell if it is one that needs replacing and what the reasoning was, I think it is for better steel right?

Thanks.

Red,

Are you talking about replacing the factory MIM'd part that USRAC previously used on the M70 with a proper part machined out of spring steel? If so you can tell if you have a cast extractor by examining its nose. There are two small hash marks cast into the end of the MIM'd part. I beleive that as of 2005, maybe 2004 all new M70's come with Williams spring steel extractors form the factory. These lack the afforementioned hash marks.

I'm sure the spring steel extractor is "better" but is it really needed?

When this was hashed about awhile back, even with the spring steel extractor it was advised to never close the bolt and pop the extractor over the head of a cartridge.

Sorry to say that I do that all the time, with the cast extractor. I do have a couple Williams extractors that I had to wait over a year for, in case I ever need them!

I will look at it tonight. I am just trying to get it dialed in for use, I just got the medium height rings yesterday and have NECG sending me a higher blade, gotta get a taller front blade too.

I just wanted to cover all my bases. I think mine is 2001-2003, but might not have been typical as I have the one piece triggerguard with two screws rather than the two piece three screw setup. All steel as well.

thanks will, don't want to spend any money on something if I won't need it.

What the hell, if it bugs you, a new extractor just costs about $20-$30. That is a cheap balm for one's neuroses. I'm neurotic; it bugged me so I bought three Wiliams extractors. I bought mine after Will did, and they knew the extractors were for me and not Will; so mine took about a week to arrive.
