crshelton.405 load question for Jorge
Jorge,
After a good practice session today with the factory Hornady 300 grain .405 ammo, I decided to load up a box of 50 Barnes 300 grain TSX bullets with N133 for my Hondo hunt in mid August. Based upon your good results with this bullet, can you answer a few questions for me as follows?
1. How many grains of N133 works best for you?
2. What COL do you use?
3. Do all the grooves fit inside the case or do you crimp on one of them?
I will be using Federal Large Rifle Match primers which work best for me in my 1895 .405 and 1886 .45-90.
Thanks,
CRS

AtkinsonYou need to talk to JudgeG that posts here..He had a 405 Mod. 95 modidfied to seat the bullets out as far as reasonable and got about 2000 to 2100 FPS with a 400 gr. Woodleigh, he duplicated the great 450-400 double rifle balistics..That puts the .405 in the elephant catagory with a solid, and makes it the perfect buffalo rifle.

crsheltonThank you Ray, but I have been there and done that:
http://forums.accuratereloadin...6321043/m/2701040671 For a while Jorge and I have been exchanging notes on 300 grain loads in our 1895 .405 rifles and where I had jumped ahead of him with N133 and the North Fork bullets, he is now ahead of me with N133 and the Barnes TSX bullets. He has been pleased with his results, so I just want to verify a few things before I begin loading the Barnes bullets.

http://www.xplat.net/ The Judge's load works, but way too much trouble with hollowing out the mag length, etc. A 300 gr TSX or North Fork or 300gr NF solid @2250 will match that 400gr Woodleigh any day. I spoke with Barnes and their TSX's ogive was specifically designed with the 405's mag issues in mind.
Anyhow, my load is 51.5gr of N-133 (50.5 for the NF solid). I don't have the load book in front of me but I seat the TSX down to the last groove and I'm pretty sure OAL is 3.210. Fed 210 match primers and I also had a Lee Factory Crimp Die made. Both my jap 405s shoot half inch groups at 50 yards all day long with the same POI for the Woodleigh, TSX, NF soft, Hornady soft. The NF solid also shoots to POI but I have to drop down the powder charge. Complete pass through on shoulder shots on hogs at 100yds with the TSX so far. When I get home today I'll double check my numbers but I'm pretty sure those are it. jorge

crsheltonThank you sir; just what I needed.
BTW, I picked up the last two boxes of Hornady .405 300 grain PSP in the Allen Cabelas last week as these are presently out of production; they should be fine for medium sized critters if I can place them right.

http://www.xplat.net/ Great, let me know how they shoot. They should be fine though. I have a few boxes of the Hornadys just for target shooting and crap. I bought a bunch of the TSXs on sale as well as some North Forks so I have a lifetime supply!
