SAFARIKIDLooking for a Great 458 Lott Expanding bullet and Load...
I'm back into the "Med Bore" stuff for the moment(458 Lott) and want a Great 400-500Gr All copper,or similar bullet I can depend on,that will stay together on Boars and Buff.I have killed several buff with 458Win Mag and 450 Barnes X when they first came out(some exited!),but is there something better now?(Swift,North Fork,Other??)Hmmm, whats this 550 Woodleigh about?...I am thinking 22-2400fps in my Lightweight Custom....Thanks!

shootawayI like the Swift bullet because my rifling can bite into them and throw them well. They are fusioned and have a partition. They are really accurate and will let me put the bullet were it should go.If I was shooting a smaller caliber I would go with the Barnes TSX because the bullets don't need to be so big and difficult to stablize.H4898 is best.

AtkinsonI really like the Woodleighs in the new heavyweights..I have not use the big 458s but have used the 416 Rem with 450 gr. Woodleighs and the 404 with 450 gr. Woodleighs, also the 375 with 350 gr. Woodliehs and I think they are fantastic..I have always liked Woodleigh bullets and they have a long time track record.
Unfortunatly the greatest buffalo bullet of all time, the cup points made my Northfork are no longer, they were a truly wonder bullet that did it all from duiker to Elephant.

PAHunterAnother vote Swift Aframe.... always, always hold together, perfect mushroom, deep penetrating. My first bullet of choice for heavy game.

465H&HThe 550 grain Woodleigh .458 soft might be a little much for boar but I was very impressed with over 4 feet of penetration on a hip to off shoulder shot on a big man mauling bull buff. It went through the stomach, liver, lung, rib cage, shoulder bone and was found under the hide. It will proably completely penetrate on a heart/lung shot, so be carefiul!

Can't ask for more than that! What kind of velocity were you starting those off at? I would think ~2150-2200fps would be about right in the Lott?

That particular load was with H-4895, Hornady cases and Federal Mag primers. It went 2,150 fps over my chronograph from a 22" barrel. With solids using the same load data they are an absolute hammer on elephant heads with more than enough penetration for exits on side body or head shots. At 2,050 fps they work well but penetration is noticeably less.
