reddy375Orig DWM ammo 404 Jeffery
Hi All,
Have test fired my Type A, 404 Mauser quite a bit now. Thought you guys might be interested in the results!
80 grains of IMR 4320 (as recommended by Champlin) shoots avg of 2280 fps. At 50 yards I was able to shoot a 1/2 inch group. JJ from Champlin sent me a target 3 shots in one big hole with the same load in my rifle!
Anyway of more interest is some old ammo I bought recently - They are solids made by DWM, the head stamp says: DWM 555, Kal 404.
They fired fine and chronoed at 2136 FPS, not bad for 50 year+ ammo! The old boxes are falling apart and apart from the german writing, has a label on them that says: A.F.STOEGER, NEW YORK, SOLE IMPORTER, USA.
Am tempted to use them on my elephant in July but guess I better not push it !
Does anyone know where I can host some pix to put on the site?
Thanks

fredj338I love it when another .404 guy comes of age.

Try this site:
www.hunt101.com/reddy375,
Sounds great.

Be respectful of that fine lady. If you ever tire of her, I am sure she will quickly take up with another fine gentleman.
I have some old DWM ammo also, with a silver colored solid (nickel plated steel FMJ?), that is head stamped differently:
"k D W M k" on one hemicircle, with the K's sideways
and
"10.75x73" comprising the other half of the headstamp.

AtkinsonI would not use those old bullets on an elephant, I have seen some that came apart, some that fishtailed, some that bent, on elephant..An old PH buddy of mine had a box full of them, and he had probably shot over a 1000 elephant..He dispised most of the early solids in the 404 and most other calibers..He said good solids only come along in the last 20 years...

GanyanaI'll second Ray on that. The old German solids including the 80's vintage RWS were very soft. They were liked for use on buff by the tsetse department hunters as they would penetrate far enough for most jobs but wouldn't go through a buff on broadside if you hit a big bone (shoulder or spine). I still cannot post pictures but PM a email adress and I'll send you some photo's of these bullets I have dug out of buff.
Not elephant muti!
