gents:

is a whitworth alaskan the same as the whitworth? looks the same and has the same floorplate release in the bow of the trigger guard. can such a rifle have its safety replaced with a 3 pos safety? is there a reason to replace the bottom metal?

what would one fetch in say 95% condition?
BTWm it has the whitworth emblem on the front receiver ring but has a brown ventilated recoil pad.

I thought the Alaskan had a montecarlo stock and non express rear sights.

For the most part it is the same rifle. Yes any MKX or FN replacement 3 pos safety would work fine. For my $$ no reason to replace the guard.

This (rear sight is likely a Williams adjustable and not the Whitworth 3-leaf), and I believe no barrel band sling swivel. I am not sure the bluing is as deep/polished, but I could be wrong.

Should be no different in replacing the safety as noted above.

Bottom metal, if it has the release in the bow, should be the same as the Whitworth.

I just picked up a 25+ year old NIB MK X Alaskan .458. Yes it has williams rear sight, gold bead hooded front sight, monte carlo stock w/ventilated pad. One cross bolt that may be a fake, and adjustable trigger with a nice bedding job. Bluing is OK, no barrel band. Nice rifle for the price thats for sure!

Hi Jeff, you didn't mention which caliber you are looking at.

Most of these rifles in the larger calibers can run from $600 to $1000 dollars. A lot depends on the desirability of the caliber.

In the lighter calibers it could be a Mark X Viscount or Cavalier if it has the rollover cheekpiece.
Many of the Mark X's had in the bow release and some of the Whitworth Mark X's had the button release.
I have never seen an English Whitworth without Whitworth on the action either the rolled or engraved ID. Although I do have one which has both along with English proofs, the soldered front ramp, in the bow release and the brown Whitworth pad. I am especially partial to the English cheek which is smaller than those which followed.

In any event buy it and you won't be unhappy as even the most plain jane mark X's typically shoot really well and they always feel like a "real" rifle when you carry them.
