Commercial PMC ammo in .375 H&H too long for the magazine!!!!
I have purchased my first .375 H&H in a Win post 64 Model 70 which is a CRF in stainless steel. Initially, I am trying different types of commercial ammo and have just discovered that 300 grain Barnes X manufactured by PMC in the .375 are too long for the magazine of this rifle. The rounds measure 3.620 inches and it looks like the magazine can only handle a length up to 3.600 maximum. How can this be? Is there anyway of making the magazine longer?

The trouble is with PMC as usual...Use another ammo...You could possibly lenthen the magazine but it would be pretty expensive and why? Use another brand or get someone to handload your ammo or seat the PMC bullets a little deeper if you can....A 300 gr. BarnesX is too long a bullet in a monolithic I suspect, and prone to tipping on impact I would think....

Hello ronl,

I've heard that the Winchesters have the "shortest" magazines of the magnum length actions, and that they will not handle above max length (3.600") cartridges.

I've also recently purchased a M70 Classic SS in 375 H&H, but have not tried any factory ammo besides the Federal 300 gr Partition, which works fine. I think that we need to stick with ammo loaded to 3.600" OAL max.?

If you have to feed that PMC ammo from the magazine, I think that I would rather file 0.020" off of the tip of the bullet rather than opening up the magazine.

Thanks for the "heads-up" on the PMC ammo, and good luck with it.

Bill

Personally I'd open up the mag. With that said my favorite 375 H&H load is 76 grs of 760 over a 300 gr. Nosler partition at a COL of 3.600.
Give it a try!
By the way, PMC Ammo is junk and you should not let it foul your Winchesters barrel!-Rob

RonL,

I bought a box of PMC years ago just to try the Baarnes X. I understand that they made it themselves under license to Barnes. One of the cartridges in the box was bent up so badly it would net even chamber, so I took it back to the dealer.

They sent it back and PMC returned me one cartridge. I thought I would at least get a freebie box of ammo!

I don't buy their stuff anymore. Strong hint follows.

I bought a box for my .338 Winnie when it was new....Barnes and it wouldn't chamber either. I don't buy it anymore.
