Ben589BAT Machines Actions
Do any of you guys know, or have any experience with these actions?
http://www.batmachine.com/products/products.htmThey say they're made to the "highest possible standards" etc., (just like everyone else generally), but I don't see ANY information on their website about their extractors, feed mechanisms, trigger options, ANYTHING ... just different fluting options for the bolt and other such nonsense.
Maybe I'm missing it. I don't know them, but I'm looking around at some different companies and sites on the web - and this one just stands out since they have NO information on safeties, extractors, etc.

PeglegThese are top of the line actions and are made to the highest possible standards. They are mostly used for benchrest actions and long range (1000 yd.) guns. Mostly set up to use the Jewell or Remington style triggers. Call them and talk to Tom Dickson or Bruce Thom. Dickson will most likely answer the phone as Bruce doesn't much like to talk during the work day. By the way they install mostly Sako type extractors. Can't comment on safeties as the benchrest actions I've seen don't have safeties.

x-manBen589,
BAT makes what many consider to be the "Rolls Royce" of 1000 yard bench rest actions (and rifles).
The safties are Remington style....They accept Reminton style triggers.

sierrabravo45I have visited Bruce's Shop and it is impressive. Actions were all about in various stages of development, and tolerances are outstanding. I know a bunch of 1000 yard benchresters who use his actions and they work well. You are buying an action; thats it. He includes a trigger hanger for the trigger (I think), most people I know put Jewell's on his actions. I am pretty sure he uses a Sako Style extractor.
Send a PM to "OMJ" he is good friends with Bruce and would probably help you out.
I want a Right Bolt, Left Port, Right Micro-Eject from him....His actions aren't cheap, but well worth the money. I saw his prototype action for the Cheytac...That was cool....
Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

BAT actions are great - I have 3 on benchrest rifles. They are purpose built for accuracy competition, varminting, etc and are excellent in those roles.
A BAT is no more comparable to an action such as a Mauser than a Ford F250 could be compared to a Ferrari Enzo. They are intended to serve very different purposes.

Ben589I'm looking for a .416 Rigby action -- and BAT was the only ones that made an octagon action. I'd wanted to go with an octagon barrel.
Their actions looked good to me, I just don't know much about them. Thanks for the inputs guys.
I was originally thinking of buying a rifle and having it re-barreled, new custom stock, probably re-triggered, etc. if I went with a Ruger #1 in .416, but for roughly the same price I could just buy a raw action and go from there.

Ben589I'm a bit curious about their port lengths in their .416 Rigby category action. It lists the port as only 3.5" -- seems that would be awfully tight tolerances for feeding/ejecting a loaded Rigby out of.

tiggertateWhat kind of rifle are you building? If its a walk-around hunting gun you may be barking up the wrong tree. BATS are pretty large plus you will need a repeater and therefore bottom metal. BY the time you add all that up from their base price you're way up into the repro magnum mauser or Mod 70 style actions.
If you want a tactical-style gun that's a different matter.
"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Ben589Yeah -- the way it looks I may do better with a barreled action set from Montana Rifleman in Stainless and settle for 458 Lott.
I looked at the Ruger M77, but it's just not what I "envisioned". I want more a project/custom gun than just a gun of nnn caliber in my vault.

Peter van Meurs - Procal brings in BAT & Nesika actions to order. Typical bat lead time is 3 -6 months though. My first was a 8.5" and was made into a 338 Lapua Improved by Peter.

Either the 8.5" or 10". Depending on what you are building, I would say use the 8.5"

PCFergus I have arem 700 pss .300 RUM which I really like......................................very flat shooting with a reasonable sized pill in relation to recoil, one day I want to do a long ranger on a premium action and BAT may be the answer, thinking big .338, my friend wants to do the .408 Cheytac but brass and bullets are an issue, I would be happy with the .300 RUM in an even better platform I am not sure.......................be a while yet as the missus is giving me hell for the $$ I spend on guns and related stuff

MississippianI had a BAT 10"X2" on a 1000 yd heavy gun setup. The quality was excellent and was a very smooth action to say the least. A pleasure the shoot!
