I would personally just get a 300 weatherby chambered in a Winchester Mod 70 rifle. It's more then enough for 400 yard shots and further then that is an irresponsible distance to shoot big game anyhow.
I had 20 plus reloads per shell with no problems using easily found brass. Try finding the warbird brass anyplace! The Weatherby shell is big enough with a nice long neck. You can load any bullet in that case with plenty of powder space, and a long enough neck to hold any bullet securely. Unlike the 300 win mag.

It seems there is never enough time to do things right, but always enough time to do them over

I wholeheartedly agree. My Win Model 70 in .300 Weatherby will reach out and take anything on this continent. It will push a 200 gr. Nosler Partition to 3000+ FPS and a 180 grainer to 3200+ FPS. And what's even better is that it shoots under an inch at 100 yards with handloads.
For what game are you going to use the 308 warbird, do you think that the velocity would have a better effect than a 30-06 out to 200 yards...?
As DB pointed out, for a hunting cartridge you may want to consider the Patriot - the leader in the short magnum craze. OR you may want to consider the .300 Dakota. The Dakota cartridge offers similar performance to the .300 Weatherby without the belted and that friggen radius shoulder. In any event, avoid the Weatherby action at all costs.
