Rem 700s and HS Precisions for big bores
Firstly there is a gunsmith on 24HourCampfire does a nice job of screws attaching the bolt handle.

An HS Precision magazine means no feeding problems and great for broad flat nose bullets in calibres like 416 Rem etc.

The Rem 700 has about 4 times as much stock material behind the recoil lug as a Mauser and the recoil lug is 2 or 3 times bigger than the the Mausers "223" recoil lug. I know for a fact that a Rem 700 needs no barrel lug on at least a 458 Win.

Fit a Sako style extractor.

An HS Precision rifle would be a nicer way to go but a bit dearer then a Rem 700.

Either rifle in the glass stock with the aluminiun bedding block whould not need a barrel recoil lug on about any calibre and HS Precision chamber any SAAMI calibre so 460 Wby etc is there.

The Rem 700 and HS Precision take all the real heavy duty detachable mounts like Badger and Nightforce.

Look at the Granite picture. 222 Sako style recoil lug and little stock material behind the baby recoil lug.

It's not hard to argue against, it simply that the reasons mod 700s/HS are not suited to DGR employement have been stated a thousand times! The problem there are those who simply don't listen, and most, here, are unwilling to be drawn into a "NO END" string that accomplishes nothing. Build what ever you want, and don't worry about whether is is good or bad, it's your money, and your butt on the line! sleep

Mac,

I am getting neither but just raising some points that the HS Precision has over the Granites etc.

Mike,

Who does the screw attachments on Remington bolt handles?

The HS detachable magazine system is not as robust as it could be.

We use Remingtons to hunt enemy combatants (who shoot back from time to time), but want tuned CRF actioned rifles for hunting game. Tradition probably has a lot to do with it.

I will have a look around on 24Hours in the next day or two as a mate of mine is interested in seeing it.

In my opinion a CRF that is working is the nicest looking action when cartridges are being cycled. The in line push feeders have the 22 rimfire look Big Grin The CRFs almost have a steam engine look where you can see everything working.

Actually the centre line feeders should be the actions that are called CRF. Smiler

But as I said to Mac I was just trying to open discussion.

For example much discussion on big bores revolves around bedding and split stocks. Well the the Rem 700 is miles in front of the Granite in this area and in addition has a big tang for bedding that sits on top of the wood.

Oh, no! Not the Remington 700 / PUSH-FEED controversy again... Razzer

Hello, Gentlemen! I'm BA-AACK!

I've been working on my STILL as-yet unfired 700 BDL / .375 RUM rifle today.
She's almost ready to go.
I need to disassemble her and get a few things detailed out and we're ready for the maiden voyage.
Remember, I'm not here to argue the CRF/PF points. My rifle was chosen because I use the 700 and I wanted a '.375'...
So, I GOT BOTH! clap

She's looking good.
Glad to see so many of you are still slugging away at each other. Wink

Oh, yeah, and another thing ---

I'll try to get back with the 'Bolted-on Bolt Handles for Remingtons' thing.
AR15.com had/has some information on it; one of their Industry Partners builds Military/Police Remington 700's.

I've still never had a FTF/FTE with my 700's... beer
BTW, here's an inspiring link back almost 2 years ago that finalized my decision to get the 700 / .375 RUM:

THANK YOU!

Why screw that ugly looking rem bolt on couldn't a smith weld one of those nice talley bolt handles on ?? Or make somthing that looks a bit more classy like sakos or wins bolt handle etc. In Fact I reckon the M70 has one of the toughest/coolest looking bolt handles from the factory.

Why in the WORLD would you put something as HIDEOUSLY UGLY as the M70 bolt handle on the M700...?! Eeker (sounds nasty coming back the other way, doesn't it?)
...when you could put on a "HOLLAND" instead? (has a better snob appeal sound to it, anyway.)

OR get a grip on things with the Tactical version:

BTW, the riflestock that comes on the Remington 700 POLICE is an H-S Precision stock.

RUH-ROH!

Bus master is that tactical bolt handle a whole new bolt or just a knob ??

Obviously we have different tastes, I don't know I just like rounded metal on my bolts not squared off.

You really don't like the M70 bolt better than the stadard 700 bolt handle Confused

I would have thought that most people would have thought the same as me on that one Big Grin

The 'Tactical' unit is a knob. The factory knob is cut off and the end is threaded for the 'BIG UNIT'.
I think the picture shows the tell-tale signs of the handle being screwed onto the bolt.
The other rifle, I think, is a hunting version with the Holland bolt handle.
Their website says they aren't building hunting rifles at this time because they're busy keeping our Police & Military well equipped.

One thing I've learned from this Forum is that tastes vary and defending one's own preferences gets to be tiring.
It's more fun to appreciate whatever the other guy likes and prod him into using and enjoying it than it is to try to convert them... beer

The Winchester M70 looks great just the way they are.
I happen to LIKE the appearance of the Remington 700 bolt handle. The new Remington 504 .22LR has a rounded knob that, in my opinion, detracts from the brand identifier look of the 700 handle.
Naw, I was jokingly making a point of 'trash talking' the other guy's choices, that's all.
No hard feelings. Big Grin

PC,

My mate wth the 300 RUM has one of those tactical knobs on one of his Rem 700s.

If you go to the forum

http://www.24hourcampfire.com

and search around the place you will find plenty of pictures of done up Rem 700s along the tactical lines.
