Advice on a 458 Lott
I want to have my first rifle built in 458 Lott on a CZ550 magnum action and a lothar walther barrel of 20". I'm mainly going to use it for backup on the big stuff. I live in South Africa and with the new firearms act it might take a while so I'm on research duty for now. What thoughts can be shared on the GS Custom bullets or others for reloading for the 458 Lott.

I have a Ceska 550 Safari Magnum this caliber, but I still have not released. The purchase of the rifle was a whim and I will not be able to use in Africa. When money permits me, I'm going to reload this cartridge, a level 45-70 or so to hunt wild boar. I'll tell you.

Regards,

Oscar.

Thanks Oscar. I hope you enjoy the hunting. It will still be quite a while before I have mine I'll let you know what I have decided.

My CZ550 was built by David Christman with a Shilen barrel. I have only shot 500grn. Hornady factory RN solids. It hurts me to shoot it and 3.5" 3 shot groups at a hundred is best I've seen.

I have a CZ550 in 458 Win Mag and it will shoot clover leaf 3 shot groups with handloads...soft or solid. I just bought a new CZ in 458Lott so I have not loaded any for it yet. I will let you know how that goes. I shot a few factory loads thru it to start breaking in the barrel and it shot pretty good.

A 20" barrel is a hell of a short barrel for the likes of the 458LOTT.
I'd consider around 23" for velocity, muzzle blast, balance and handling, but that's just a thought.
I'm having a 458Win built with a 23" Walther at the moment.

I cut the bareels down on most CZ .458's that come past me. Usually to 21". With a straight case and S321 powder the difference in velocity between 20" and 25" isn't worth worrying about (about 30fps with Barnes 500grn solids).

With lighter bullets and 341you can turn the Lott into a real long range plains gamme number with the 25" barrel (if you can stand the recoil). Got the 350Gn Copper HP to 3000fps out of a basic CZ...With a scope that makes it a good 250m Kudu gun...but then I would rather shoot my 7x64 on kudu and keep the lott for what it was designed for Wink. From the short barrels I typically load 450grn Barnes (Solids and TSX) to 2325fps. Does the job.

As far as GS Bullets for the Lott I would want

them to be Round Nose or Flat Nose for MAX

penatration. They make 550gr. Flat nose for

Cal. 458.

Ganyana,

every time I get to thinking the Lott recoils, I just fire two rounds of my 577 Gibbs OH. For another six months the notion disappears.

I’m wrighting this with a tear in my eye and a little smile. The quote for my dream Lott was a bit higher than I thought it would be. But thats what you get for going custom. My “ Minister of Finance “ said that my dream will have to wait a bit longer knife. Its not all bad. At least I’m allowed to buy the cz 458 delux and transform it into a Lott. So far I couldn,t find anything negative about the gs custom bullets.
What is the diverence in felt recoil between the Lott and standard 458? If the rifles are the same.
Thank you my fellow hunters for the advice and info. I hope the world ressesion passes quickly over my house.

Rich,
They were 500grn round nose @ approx 2300fps. I was shooting off sticks as I can't handle the recoil off the bench. 3 neck surgeries and 1 back surgery.
