KevinH404 Jeffrey Rifle Build
I am thinking of having a 404 built by Waffenfabrik Hein. Does anyone have any experiences with them as a company? I am looking at the Palouse synthetic stock model for a good work gun. I already have a 375 and 458 model 70, but have always wanted a 404. Also, what would a good barrel length be for this caliber? I would prefer as short a barrel as possible, but I don't want to give up good balance in the gun. Any help would be appreciated.

The 404 case has enough room in it that you should be able to get workable velocities with anything down to about 21" or so. You can have the builder balance the rifle at whatever barrel length you choose. Mine has a 24" barrel and I like it even though I usually like shorter 20-22" barrels. Hope this helps!

WinkI agree with ACRecurve, the 404 is not a long range rifle/caliber combination and it is best as a short barreled, maneuverable in-your-face big bore that you can swing fast. You'll be deadly on anything with that combination. I would even consider a 20 incher even though mine is 22" (I think). Get good iron sights and configure with quick release scope mounts, even claw mounts if you've got the budget.

Actually it will be 26" because I like 26" barrels. The rifle will have more grace, better lines, and for me, point better.
As for velocity, I am going for original Kynoch velocities, 2125 or 2150 for 400 grain Woodleighs. I probably will up it a bit for the NF Cup Points.
I never have been, nor shall I ever be one of those guys trying to wretch the last few FPS out of any round!

byf42is that a custom m-70? or did you buy it like that? the rear sight ramp i don't remember seeing on the m-70's.

fredj338Thanks! No, it started life as a .300RUM & I had it rebarreled, 1/4rib, banded front, cross bolts & had the forend shortened about 2".

WFH made a 338 Lapua, N5 machined bridge, synthetic stock last year. I am pleased with the fit, finish and feeding (for grins, i cycled 3 505 gibbs as i am considering that next).

How´s your 9.3x66 coming along? Erkki offered to sell me a Sako 9.3x66 directly from the factory but I politely declined. Do you have a double? I´m thinking along the linec of a .450 No2.

I keep going back and forth between using a Remington action or a Sako AIII. Will probably flip a coin, or ask my gunsmith what he thinks. He won't give me an answer, but it will at least put off the decision a little longer.

MHC_TXWaffenfabrik Hein is currently building a rifle for me. All I can say at this point is they were helpfull and easy to work with. My rifle should be finished in June of this year.
