Hornady factory 458 Lott ammo

Hornady is making factory loads for the 458 Lott but I have not seen anyone post about them. If I had a choice I would choose Hornady over all other Mfg's for ammo so I'm glad it's them dong this. I am loading some ammo today for the 458 but I wondered if any of you had experience with the Hornady stuff yet?

It's been discussed a little off and on. It lists for $80/20 rounds both softs and solids. Hopefully, this will get the die manufacturers off their duff and produce some 458 Lott dies at reasonable prices.

Does anyone know if they will load it using the "heavy magnum" technique? My best handloads cannot duplicate their HM's in 375, so I would like to see a Lott HM. Also I wonder what bullets they will use?

Sooner, 76 grains of RL-15 with a 270 grain bullet is identical with the Hornady Heavy magnum load out of my rifle. So is 72 grains with the 300 grain bullet. They are identical in trajectory, velocity and point of impact. Heck even the felt recoil is identical for me.

I have told this to quite a few others who have tried it as well with similiar results.jj

Cabelas has the Lott ammo for 56 bucks a box in the reloading catalog. That's what I recall from looking in there yesterday when it came in the mail.

JJHACK, You have got to be kidding me! I tried everything to duplicate HM's and couldn't get even close. I guess I should've just asked. I loaded some just like you said and I'll be damned, I got right close. Thanks for sharing that, you don't by chance know what the light mag load for the 30-06 is, do you?

My 30/06 which is the only other hunting rifle I have is kinda finicky. Or maybe it's just me. Anyhow I use only 165 grain bullets and don't load them near max. The accuracy is like a magic wand for me and I have fallen on the side of bullet placement over power. I shoot them 2850fps nothing to brag about but it is from a 22" barrel and a 7.5 pound rifle.

My scope has custom reticles and is also a big reason for the success of this rifle. I use a 3.5-10 variXIII with the German #4 reticle. I had it done right by Premier reticles not leupolds idea of the 4A reticle which is horrible.

I also had Premier add another partial thin crosshair to be three inches High at 10 power for 100 yards. Now I zero my rifle at 100 yards with the high cross hair and the center crosshair is zeroed for 240 yards. This also puts the thick part of the bottom duplex on the money at 400 yards.

It also gives me rather quick bullet drop compensation by knowing I have 3" at 100 yards I also know I have 6" at 200, 9" at 300, 12" at 400 yards etc. etc. between the high Crosshair and the center crosshair. With my rangefinder and the laminated drop table on my stock placing shots at nearly any distance on a calm day with this puny 30/06 is spectacular!

I have been able to consistantly blow to bits one gallon milk jugs full of water at 400 yards sometimes as many as 8-10 in a row. I have hit orange clay pigeons as many as 3-4 in a row at 400 yards. I can't speak for anyone else but for me that rocks! My friends with 300 mags and 14 power scopes are not as consistant with their guns but can do it with my rifle because of the setup of the scope and load! It also seems the more they hammer away the worse they get with the big 30's. My old and boring 30/06 has nearly zero recoil and it's a dream to shoot.

So that is why I choose the softer more accurate loading. The accuracy combined with teh scope setup is just to good to fool with!jj

JJ, If mine shot that good I wouldn't mess with it either. I havent done much load development with mine, and the Light Mags were so spectacular over the chrono. I usually like to find the max load for the rifle then work up an accurate hunting load. In all cases with my rifles the most accurate load was nowhere near max, but I like to know how close I am before settling.

Be confident in their work they do not effect leupolods warranty and they can make about anything you desire in the way of crosshairs.

Every single scope I now own has been modified by them!jj

I also highly recomend premier reticles, great work, fair prices, and quick turnaround. They have about the best prices on new leopolds, and much cheaper to get the reticle fit on a new scope then ship them one to have it fit. The had the 4a reticle and click turrets fit to the M8 2.5x compact, and shipped the day after I ordered it. Can't wait to get another duplicate scope.

Cabela's doesn't seem to have the Lott ammo yet. I called; the person I spoke with couldn't find it in their system. They do have the .17 rimfire though. (I have no idea what it's good for, but they have it.)

If anyone else knows where to get it, please post the source. Thanks!

In Cabelas 2002 shooting catalog on page 32 at the very bottom of the page on the left side it's listed as 59.99, may not be on the shelf yet but it's definately in the catalog.
