H4350 in the Overkill
How do the short cut powders effect pressures and velocities with all else being equal?

I purchased a new 8lb container of H4350 to use in my 600 OK for practice and load development for my upcoming safari…

I read that H4350 is now available as the shortcut version only…

I don’t have any old containers of H4350 to visually compare the granules to…

Here is what I did notice…

My old load of 150 grains of H4350 over a Woodleigh solid would generate about 2050 fps…

Yesterday I loaded 153 grains of H4350 over some of the same bullets and only got about 1950 fps…

A 100 fps drop with a 3 grain increase in charge weight?

What’s going on here???

Do I need to just keep bumping the charge weight up till I get back to my old velocity?

Same brass, same bullets, new lot of powder, new lot of primers (Fed 215)…

I also noticed that Fed 215s now come in a blue box as opposed to a red one…

Not that the color of the box matters but I wasn’t sure if Federal had changed anything either…

Thanks for any help…

Lot to Lot variations can make a big difference. Definately saw changes like that with H50BMG. Used to buy 50lbs of the same lot when I was competitively shooting .50BMG's. A 100ft/sec change is significant though. I'd find another lot and see if it repeats. I'd probably just increase the powder charge till I got the same velocity as before. You got lotsa room for more powder.-Rob

I found most of the shorter cut powders are
slower than their old longer cut versions,
In your application might take 6-10 grains
more to get same velocity as before.
Pressure will be the same and pressure
will be ok.Ed

RIP
They went a little overboard on the deterrent coating of the grains when they "shortcutted" it.
That is correct, the H4350 is all "Short Cut/SC" now, even though it does not specify it on the can.

Last time I bought powder there was still a distinction between H4831 (longer grains) and H4831SC (shorter grains).

Thanks for the replies…

Rob, probably not going to buy another lot of powder (getting hard to find and I need to save the $$$ for trophy fees)…

Like ya said got lots of room, going to work back up in two to three grain increments until I get back to where I was and maybe a little more (600 Nitro + P if you will)…

Ed & RIP…

Thanks for the confirmations…

I guess with all else being equal less velocity would equate to “slower”…

I’ve got a can of 4831 and a can of 4831SC…

I guess Hodgdon just decided to drop the SC designation…

What date did H4350 start being sold as a "Short Cut" version?

The last time I bought some was about a year ago so I was wondering if my load development was done with the old stuff or the newer short cut version.

Maybe some one could measure a few granules and give use the measurement?
Is the new SC stuff half as long? Would a simple visual comparison spot the difference?
