ScottSRe: Why a 416 Rigby?
Mickey,
I like it because it is relatively big.
I will advise you that low pressure is still an issue of importance, but not for the reasons you might think.

Lawdog_GaryI don't think it can be put any better than what ELKampMaster said. Only thing is I wish I had said it. Put me down as another .416 Rigby user. Lawdog

PanchoI bought my Ruger because everybody said a 375 H&H was enough gun and Ruark said to use enough. Keeping the premise of "older whiskey, younger women and more money", I figured more must be better. Loving it and nobody else in town has one. Takin it to Zim this summer to test drive it.

ELKampMasterALF,
Good analogy! I look forward to riding my "Harley" into the sunset!

GeorgeSIf you grew up reading Ruark, you might want a .416 Rigby for nostalgia's sake.
If you grew up reading O'Connor, you might want a .270 Win.

You should be a writer, or at the very least a salesman. My congrats on a splendid answer to the question.

AtkinsonThe 416 Rigby is an old and respected cartridge and it works on DG today as well as it did a century or two ago..That said, it is mostly nostalgia that justifys its very existence..It is a waste of a big action that would be better suited to a 505 or 500 Jefferys IMO...and the 416 Rem will do the same thing on a much smaller trimmer gun...
I suppose that is why I have chosen the 404 Jefferys as I can have nostalgia on a 375 length action...but again the 416 Rem is just as good sans the nostalgia bit, so I have one of these also.....

ScottSWell to be more specific than in my previous post.
Here is why I use a 416 Rigby. Elk and moose.
These are all acceptable hunting loads for my rifle:
Bullet - 350gr Speer
Brass - Norma
95 gr of IMR 4895 - muzzle velocity - 2747 fps
96 gr of IMR 4895 - muzzle velocity - 2769 fps
98 gr of IMR 4350 - muzzle velocity - 2531 fps
104 gr of IMR 4350 - muzzle velocity - 2771 fps (this is my hunting load)
105 gr of IMR 4350 - muzzle velocity - 2789 fps
106 gr of IMR 4350 - muzzle velocity - 2803 fps
300 gr Barnes X (accurate load if not fast)
Norma brass
CCI 250 primer
107gr of IMR7828 - muzzle velocity - 2649 fps
With the exception of the 300 gr X bullet loads, get those ballistics with a Remington or Dakota mag.
This rifle possesses superior trajectory than a 30-06, with considerably more "knock down" power. That is why I use a 416 Rigby.

bwanamrmWhy did I buy a 416 Rigby? Because I already had a 416 Remington Magnum! Hell, I love rifles. I'm having Hill Country Rifles build me a 280 Remington right now and I have a 270 Winchester and (gasp) a 7mm Remington Magnum. Another .284 caliber! Yes.
I own four 375 H&H's! Why? Because I love rifles! Custom rifles, factory rifles, magnum rifles, varmit rifles, big bore, medium bore and small bore rifles, single shots and bolts and double rifles! I've never neede an excuse to buy a rifle or someone else's opinion to validate it!
I think I'll head off to Gunsamerica and see if I can buy a 416 Taylor or maybe a Hoffman or maybe a Weatherby.................
There, I feel better now!
