BNagelShooting big caliber rifles : follow-up question

Re: targets, using pie or paper plate(s) at 50 yards without using a sling, keeping face to stock, etc. like shooting clays
1. Do you use some sort of aimpoint like a drawn in or stuck on bulls-eye, or just use the whole plate. (Trying to decide what's meant by "You're probably looking at the target.")
2. Is it better to use a pie plate alone vs. putting it over a larger target (silhouette of kudu / gemsbok / whatever) like bowhunters use?
3. Do you think my oval Chinette paper plate (vs. round) idea, done to cover vitals from low shoulder to heart -- the "one third up the leg" thing), can throw your aim off? Thought it would be good to shoot at some thing like the actual target instead of subconsciously "expecting" to see a target / paper plate on the animal hunted.
Thanks experts!

N E 450 No2Get some real deer looking targets.
Aim at the animal as you would in the field. There is no definate aiming point so you will truely [well almost] see how you will hit on game.
Then go on some pig hunts. There is no substitute for shooting live game with your big bore.
Plus wild pig meat is very good to eat.

tiggertateHey, BNagel, you must not like your neighbor too much, LOL.

RobgunbuilderThats the ticket. When you can't keep 3 shots on the pie plate offhand standing, your beyond your current hunting limit. If it's 50 yrds so what. Youll just have to get that close and it's worth it! Keep practicing. My limit is 150 yrds. It took a while to get there. Nothing magical just personal real honesty. The animal deserves no less.-Rob

You're description paints a good picture,
Robgunbuilder .
It's easy to imagine using the type of target
BNagel shows us, starting at 50-yds., or even less if need be, and then working our way back 'til we find our limit at that time.
It will be especially handy for my buddy who thinks he can/could shoot an ELK at 500-yds. with his .338~~~! I'll be sure to bring my new NIKON Laser800 Rangefinder.
BNagel, I hope there's a berm behind your fence...are you really going to ruin a nice fence like that...?

You should reconsider your loads -- you are getting very little penetration. I see no marks on the fence at all!

While your shooting and your loads appear accurate enough, you might want to add a little more powder.

"Most" of my loads will shoot through a paper plate AND a thin wood fence.
