Wink's bore guide
A few days back I asked the members of the forum to point me towards a bore guide for the calibers above 416. Apparently there are none, so I made one out of electrical conduit. Even the mechanically challenged (me) can do this.

Step one: buy some 16mm electrical conduit at your local hardware store. Cut it to the length you like with a hacksaw.

Step two: clean up the bore end of the conduit pipe and, if you want one, cut an opening at the the large end to allow pouring solvent on to patches with the jag introduced into the guide.

Step three: epoxy to the pipe an elegant piece of plastic (I chose an old toothbrush) which will fall into the bolt handle cutout on the stock to keep it in place.

Total cost for me was about 2 dollars I think. Inside diameter of conduit is just over .50 caliber so this baby is good for .458, .470 and .500 no problem.

I love a simple solution!

Unfortunately, in the states, metal conduit abounds, and I think 1/2" pvc water pipe is too big in diameter. Then again, 1/2" pvc could be wittled down fairly easily on a wood or metal lathe Big Grin

Paul,
Maybe I should start a mail order business for these.

You've been in France too long. Come home as soon as possible. Big Grin

The epoxied toothbrush handle reminds me of some of the fine engineering evident on my college buddy's Peugot back in '83.

Actually Forrest, I think I've been working in Africa too long. It makes one come up with these chewing gum, baling wire soltions because that's how you solve them. Some day I'll have to write down the amazing fix-it solutions I've seen employed in the Dark Continent.
