My 458WM worked fine for both of the buff I have killed. According to lots of people here it isn't enough for the average whitetail.

Safarikid...How about Big Angry Momma as a name?

As for the weapon of choice for Cape. Never been over the pond but I have a .375H&H that I shoot well and two .454 Casull weapons that I feel confident with. One a Browning 1885 HighWall, the other a Freedom Model 83 custom 10 inch.

I've killed 5 with a 416 Rigby and it still is my preferred choice.

My wife has killed two....1st was with a 375H&H and her 2nd was with a 416 Rigby she now prefers the 416 Rigby......smart girl.

If I did not already own a bolt action .458 Lott, it would be a .450-400 (either one) in a double rifle, or a .416 Remington, .416 Rigby, or .404 Jeffery in a bolt action. I don't think the buffalo would know the difference between them.

N E 450 No2
All the cape buff I have killed have been with double rifles in 9,3x74R, 450/400 3 1/4", and 450 No2.

No doubt the 400 and up rifles hit harder than a 9,3 or a 375, yet the only cape buff i killed with one shot was taken with the 9,3.

SO, any calibre from the 9,3 and up I would find suitable.

Taking EVERYTHING into consideration, power, penetration, recoil, shootability, follow up shots, and rifle carry ability, I think the 450/400 double rifle with a scope in QD mounts, is the BEST cape buff rifle on the Planet.

In a new made double the Heym would be my choice.

In fact, if the head was at the proper level, a Texas heart shot with that combo could also be a simultaneous Texas brain shot.

I've only killed one, and my .375 RUM worked real well. I'd use it again.

If we're shooting stuff that really needs to be crew operated, maybe we should go with this big bore magnum - http://www.usswisconsin.org/Pi...es/Big%20Guns/55.jpg

Seriously it'd depend on how close. There's a 450/.400 in a Westley Richards I've been wanting if a real fast follow up was an issue; otherwise my .416 Rem in a custom Mauser.

Will never make there except in dreams, but have to admit I would like to try my black powder 8 bore with a harden bal of about 1100 grains or so

Either my .416 Rigby or .416 Taylor. My Taylor is being re-done right now to make it more user friendly. I still haven't decided which one is going first. I am leaning toward the Taylor. reflex264

I have shot a few buffalo, and probably if the truth is told I like shooting buffalo probably better than any other critter, but it would be a toss up between buffalo, elephant and bears! But without doubt in my mind an old buff is like a damn TANK-and very hard to impress.

Also if I did not have something new to try on buff I might get bored with the entire project. To just go shoot buff over and over with 416 and 458s and such, I probably could not get too worked up over the affair!

So if I have something new to play with--then count me in.

I do! Winchester M70 500 MDM---true 500 caliber NOT .510. I have been doing load development this week heavy! The gun has a 21 inch barrel, and weighs in at 8.5 lbs with no scope. Currently I have a 550 gr Barnes type FN solid at 2215 fps---510 gr Barnes type FN solid at 2320 fps--470 HP (much like Barnes X) at 2435 fps--and a 455 gr Solid at 2420 fps. I will be in Oz in September with this gun, these loads and have 20 cull buffalo there on quota now. So I plan on giving it a workout on those, and then when I decide to return to Africa for buff and elephant then the 500 MDM will be the gun to tote!

My vote is for the .404 Jeffery, since that is what I am having built!
