EnglandReduced loads (1600-1900 fps) for .458 Lott?
I will be starting to load for a .458 Lott and would like to load some reduced-velocity loads for practice, but stouter than what Trail Boss would provide. Hornady helps me with a 500gr bullet and 4064 recipe, and Midway thoughtfully had a sale on blem .458 500gr softpoints.
I have a good supply of the Remington 405gr bullet that I'd loaded for a .45-70 lever gun. I don't think this bullet is constructed for the velocities the Lott could potentially generate, but I'd love to find a load for these that would deliver about 1600-1800 fps in the Lott for practice. I can't find any suggestions on the internet. Might any of you have a safe load you could recommend? Thanks!
(Posted this in the Reloading forum, but it was suggested to bring it here)

4sixteenSpeer has reduced load data for their 400gr FN bullet in the 1400 to 1500 fps range for the .458 Win. Mag. using SR4759 that might be useful for developing reduced loads for the .458 Lott.
Using 500gr bullets and compressed charges of certain slow burn rate powders I get muzzle velocities in the 1600 to 1700 fps range from my .458 Lott.

Fury01Around 55 grains of 3031, around 50 grains of 4198 or AA-2015 should give you what your looking for with the 405's. These amounts come from my 458 Win Mag. but with that straight case and faster powders, won't be much different in the Lott.

50grs 4198 with a backer rod wad works great in the Lott.

DoglegI use 25 grains of SR4759 in mine, under a plain based, water quenched RCBS bullet that is supposed to cast 500 grains but drops closer to 530. I don't even size them, just tumble lube in Lee liquid alox and load.
