Mad Dog375 H&H softs/solids same POI??
Boys, I know this has been covered before, but I need a refresher. I have a ruger no. 1 tropical. I've been handloading the hornady 300 gr. DGX and DGS, using hornady brass, fed. 215 mag primers and H4350 powder. I was out yesterday sighting in my scope that I had just put warne QD mounts on. When I got done, I decided to shoot a group of both the softs and solids, alternating each shot between the 2. When I got done, I had 4 shots of the softs shooting less tha 1/2" and 5 solids shooting about 3/4". The groups were shot at 50 yds. The solids were dead on the bullseye. The softs were 2" high of the bull. I backed off to 100 yds., and the solids were still dead center, but the softs were 3-3 1/2" high.
I'll be using the rifle for a cow cape buff and a tuskless ele. I'll be taking more solids than softs with me on the trip.
I've read that solids shoot lower than softs with the same load. On researching here, conventional wisdom said to back off the solid 1-3 gr. of powder to get it to shoot to the soft POI. I like how the solids are shooting with the present load, and was wondering If I could add 1-2 gr. to the soft load, to get it to hit the solids POI. The powder load, now, is exactly the same. The load is also below max. Should the soft load lower the POI, with a velocity increase?

Michael RobinsonYes, you've got it. Give it try and you should be closer to the same POI for both bullets.

Mad DogThanks Mike! I'll just load up 5 rounds of each, going up 1 gr. at a time.
