not thinking on doing this just wondering if anyone has ,and what do you guys think about a project like this. finding a stainless winchester model 70 long action magnum receiver having a barrel company like shilen, hart, etc. fit a stainless 458 lott barrel to it. put on express sights and a high quality synthetic stock fitted.to bad CZ doesn't make there safari magnum in stainless, they already have a synthetic stock model. what do you guys think.

MJinesThe best of both worlds, stainless and walnut . . . the Savage 116 SE . . . and it is controlled round feed too but without a claw extractor.

Mike, I've always thought that the Savage safari rifle was a great buy. You don't see them that often anymore. I used to have one 425 Express...that was a rare bird.

MJinesI have two sitting in the closet . . . maybe some day they will worth something. They really do look nice and I like that you can simply twist the break to turn it off and on.

I'd never heard of these before. Neat concept. Personal thoughts on the cartridge? I'd never heard of the 425 express before.

I couldn't agree more with this. I've a CZ 458 Lott that will probably be sent out to AHR for an upgrade including gunkote at some point. It seems like it'd make a handy brown bear gun for an Alaskan coastal hunt.

LionHunterIn the "old days" you could have simply called the Winchester Custom Shop and ordered exactly what you are suggesting. I have a .416Rem from them built exactly as you describe and it is a sweetheart.
I do not understand why the "new" Winchester no longer has a Custom Shop. They produced some exceptional rifles at what were reasonable prices.

SkylineI have a stainless Model 70 Alaskan in .338 WM and a stainless classic in .375 H&H. The Alaskan has a laminate stock and the classic a plastic handle.
I would love to have the stainless Alaskan come back on line and in .458....... heck I'd settle for the old .458 Win Mag and not the Lott.

bwanamrmI have a .458 Lott I built like that. Stainless Winnie action, Krieger barrel, McMillan Safari stock, Mercury recoil reducer in the stock and removable brake. As ISS mentioned, had the gun cerakoted to cut down on shine/glare. Great shooting rig, just never get around to actually taking it for a walk! I think it will be the perfect rig for bongo in the rainforests of Cameroon...

bwanamrmI liked the concept of the Lott so much I had Hill Country build a .404 Jeffery for me which I thought might be a tad more versatile.
And then Kevin Weaver built me a .375 Ruger but on a Hi-Tech stock instead of a McMillan.
Both of these rifles have seen use in Africa and accounted for buffalo and in the case of the .404, elephant as well.

Great looking rifle. Does McM inlet specifically for MRC rifles? Or do MRC rifles require custom inletting?

MikeBurkeIt has been a few years, but from memory yes it is inletted for the MRC action which I believe is either the same or very similar to the model 70.

Rick RI had McM make a stock for a Montana action in 2009. Gave them the specs for the .416" Douglas barrel I used and it dropped right in. It won't quite shoot half inch groups at 100 yards but it tries.

First trip never ended up getting off the ground. Closing on a new house in a few weeks and trying to start a family. Bartering with the wife for a 35th bday present being a buff/pg hunt. Going to be a long 7 years wait....
