I found some nice cast 400 grain bullets. They size out to.409. I know I can't push them much past 1800 FPS with out getting leading (no gas check)...or so I was told. Have any of you tried them in 450/400.

My Jeffery 450/400 measures as a .410 bore. I would not expect much accuracy with a .409 bullet. You might be able to make a die that would bump the bullets up to .411. That would work pretty well I'd think.-Rob

Rob,
I seem to get the idea you are a cast bullet guy. With your knowledge of the big bores and your inveterate tinkering and building it would appear you would be a good fit over on http://www.aimoo.com/forum/freeboard.cfm?id=514616
. I would welcome your insight and input on our subject matter. 45nut

45nut- I grew up shooting cast bullets! I could not afford all the jacketed stuff and thus, had to learn what I could about cast bullets and how to make odd-ball old stuff like 450-400's shoot. Nothing wrong with a good cast bullet at all.-rob

urdubob,

You might check with NE450 No.2 on the forum. I think he has information that might be of assistance to you.

I have not loaded cast bullets in my 450/400 3 1/4", but I have loaded them in my 450 No2. I would use the "Nitro for Black" techniques as detailed in "SHOOTING THE BRITISH DOUBLE RIFLE" VOL.2.

Can you size them down any more, say, .405 or so?

The reason I ask is that is about the difference you need to paper patch them with 16 lb paper: that is what I do to shoot my 300 gr cast bullets (.452 for my 45 Colt) in my 45-70. No leading, either.

I am assuming that this is acceptable for you rifle. Here is a site on the topic:http://www.iastate.edu/~codi/PPB/PPB.html
