404 rifle makers
Looking to augment my 375, and am thinking about a 404 or 416 (Rigby).

Who's making 404s these days? 416s are easy enough to find.

I'm thinking a 416 rig in a cz vs. 404 in ??

Thoughts, comments, complaints?

For "ready made" 404 Jeffery rifles as stated above the best way to go is CZ.

You could step up to a Mauser M 03 with a 404 Jeffery barrel.
I did!

Dakota! They do a good job and start with arguably the best action made today.

I have a 76 safari in 404 and really like it. I also have one in 375 and both shoot well.

Nate Heineke (307-745-8592) will measure you and build to your dimensions and choice of action. I have 3 of his rifles and they are superb.

I to like Rusty, bought a Mauser M03. I shot a Blaser for about 9 years and always missed the "real" rifle feel. Its kind of like a M98 blended with a Blaser. I have a 8x68S and 404 barrel!

Check out Wayne over at "American Hunting Rifles"; dollar-for-dollar he builds the best rifle on the market.

http://www.hunting-rifles.com/

He turns the CZ-550 into an outstanding piece for the field (any field).
You can do a search right here and find multiple comments and photos.

If you want to go to the ultimate level, take a look at Ryan Breeding.

http://www.rbbigbores.com/

He is the Master of the Mauser and Master of the Big Bore (period). Most certainly, he builds a workhorse that is also a solid investment / heirloom. Thanx. . . Dave

I've got a Dakota 76 in a .404. It's a lovely rifle but they are a "bit" spendy. The thing shoots like a darn target rifle, it's super accurate and it feeds and functions like a raped ape and it is not hard on the eyes.

Afraid that would put me off ever looking at the dakota. Not sure what a raped ape functions like but it don't sound good.

Finding a 404J is certainly worth persueing though. I wouldn't be without mine.

I have a Maurice Ottmar 404J built on a pre-64 Supergrade action, 1/4 rib, all the niceties, that I might be able to be talked out of!

CZ seems to be the most economical. There is a Dakota 404 Jeffery on Gunsinternational for 5k.

Thanks for the replies, I'm aware of the CZ and AHR combo, so I think I might be going that route (once I decide a caliber). I want to send AHR my 375 (which happens to be a 550) for "slicking up" anyway.

It is interesting to see that Hornady makes more-affordable ammo for both the 416 and the 404 now.

Boddington just had a nice article in Guns and Ammo magazine about the 404 jeffrey.

Anyone ever make one on a Rem 700 action? PLEASE dont start a CRF PF debate.

thanks

Joe Smithson builds really nice Big Bores, and is one of the finest craftsmen around. Look at Granite Mountain Arms website and several of his rifles are on display. Dollar for dollar Wayne Jacobson will build you anything on a CZ or GMA action.

His build time is much shorter than the other custom builders and builds very nice and functional rifles at 1/3 the price of the other high end custom builders.

Ralf Martini also is a fine craftsman.
