I don't know if this is a dumb question or not but is there any way to make a huge ass gun for not that much money. I would like to get a .600 nitro or something similar just to say that I have one but I don't have the thousands of dollars to buy one. I was just curious if there were any ways around the price tag. As of right now I am limited to a .458 lott or win mag or a .460 weatherby as the largest guns I can get for around $1500 canadian.

Schmaus, stranger things have been done, but I'm afraid you're out of luck on this one. The action alone would cost you more that the $1500 CA, and a barrel blank for a 600 Nitro would you run another $300 CA then having it fitted, and chambered would run you another $500, and then the stock work done well enough to stand the recoil, and on, and on........

Gun is 400 bucks, and just put on heavy 600
barrel(Bauska has them for about $250) and little gunsmith work.Read the 12GA From Hell

Best bet for a huge ass gun is ED'S 210 Savage single shot. No offense but unless you can do your own gunsmithing it's 3-6K of cold hard cash. FWIW the .600 NE can also be had as a magazine rifle from Heym for 15K. Real big bores just don'tr come cheap!-Rob

For $2000 you could build a 577 Nitro on a Ruger #1. Any repeater will cost you a lot more.

AND, you could make your stock from a stout railroad tie, thus adding a little eight to help control recoil.....

Or..................buy a Ruger #1 in any calibre (used) and hang a 577 or 600NE barrel on it. Sub-$1000 classy rifle.

For the underfunded big bore fan, there are always muzzle loaders, like the fabulous 8 bore front stuffers for $3K made by Mr. Gefroh (sp?) in Colorado.

Ed, I was envisioning how it would look as a simple rebarrel. Probably Dennis Olson could make one look like a legitimate express rifle.

I also think rebarreling a Ruger #1 is a relatively expedient and inexpensive route to a big bore. I've considered rebarreling one to 500NE, a versatile round for shooting low velocity cast bullets, inexpensive surplus 50BMG bullets or serious big game loads. Anything bigger requires additional complex modifications to the action area.

I picked picked up a Ruger#1 Tropical the other day just to point it and felt the need to put it down immediately or I would have taken it home: it felt and pointed beautifully. Might be a good place to start your project.

Not questioning authority, I was just under the impression that a.577 was the largest cartridge to go in a #1? With the block closed you can see the upper edge of the case on the .577. If altered to a .600, smithing would be major?

It seems to me that the problem with modifying a #1 is either going to be the light weight and/or the screwy front-heavy balance. Not that muzzleloaders aren't front heavy but I think a swamped bbl. Jaeger or English Style percussion rifle from Gefroh is a better value for the money. We're talking about all world workmanship here. I guess it's just a matter of whether you want your hunt to have a Victorian or Edwardian flair.
