Talley base screws-are they strong enough?
I have purchased a used .375 H&H which has Talley bases and rings. Are the standard Talley screws (I think that they are 6/48) strong enough for dangerous game hunting or should I have my gunsmith retap them for a bigger screw (I think that would be a 8/40)?

I called Talley and they told me that the standard screw was fine on a .375.

Thank you for any advice.

All Mauser & M-70 BGR's I have owned (375, 416, 460, 500) came with and work fine with 6-48's. 8-48's do seem to make more sense though.

It also depends on the scope weight and mounting height, but the 6-48s should work for typical 20-33 mm objective DGR scopes.

6/48's will be fine for a 375.

If you want 8/40's, Talley makes bases that come set up for those screws.

Talley rings are very nice but I did have trouble with screws on one set; the heads snapped right off when I tried to loosen them. Not a problem, though, as Dave sent a new set immediately after we talked on the phone. Something about the temper or such. I've had several other sets with no problems. FWIW.

Talley bases seem too narrow to me. I wish that he would make his bases as wide as the bottom section of the rings where they contact the base. Would be more stable that way. Just an idea. I have one now & then.

screw and glue with a soft epoxy glue, not a hard beeding epozy and 6 X 48s will work on a 460

To get them back off, just warm them

Bearclaw, I believe the bases Talley made with the Swarovski birdie on them had a wider base than his regular ones, but I'm not sure how wide they were. I do know the Swaro birdie added mucho to the price!

PME makes very nice and highly regarded base and ring sets much like Talley's but the bases are wider. I haven't used them as I prefer to stick with one solution (Talley) so that I can make impromptu changeovers if neccessary.
