NBHunterbest powder for 416 Taylor?
I have been using Rel 15 with 350gr bullets and some IMR 4064 but the listed "maximums" for these powders vary a few grains. What powders do the other Taylor fans recomend using? Preferably with 400gr and 350gr bullets out of a 24" barrel.

NBHunterJeffe,
Do you shoot the Speer 350gr magtips? If so which of the powders works best?

ACRecurveYou might check out the 416 Taylor webpage---it's a geocities address. There's quite a bit of data there.
Good Hunting

BWHere's the link to my old webpage...
The 416Taylor Webpage!Been a long time since I checked it out myself.
I recently picked up two pounds of H4895 powder. This powder showed some promise in my rifle a year or so ago, but I ran out after just a few rounds.
I've got some 400gr Hornady RN's loaded up and plan to test them this weekend.
Other than that, Reloader 15 has been the best for me so far. Benchrest is the next powder I'd like to try.

bearhunt'rI second the Reloader 15 mentions. I have run the Hornady 400 grn. round nose up to 72 grains so far and had the chrony show 2,320 out of my Taylor. Accuracy is excellent and the thump is not bad at all.
best,
bhtr
ps. As always, start low...etc...

J.L.SchottNBHunter: My loads are from a 25" barrel, but I'll include them anyway. I also only shoot 400gr bullets, I have determined they give the best results on African animals, and I don't use the Taylor for North American hunting (lower 48)
Bullet Powder Velocity
400gr SP 72gr IMR 4320
Hornady " 2383fps
Barnes " 2385fps
Nosler " 2365fps
TBBC " 2382fps
400gr FMJ
Hornady " 2411fps
Barnes " 2396fps
TBSH " 2393fps
Kynoch " 2377fps
Using the same powder charge of RL-15,I could not achieve the velocities of the IMR 4320, the loads consistantly averaged 30-40fps less. As to accuracy; my rifle seems to digest the Trophy Bonded bullets best. At 100yds (from a good solid rest) 2.5" from soft point, to solid.
One final note: I use 72.5grs of IMR 4320 for my African loads, and the velocities run just a smidge above 2400fps and accuracy remains the same.
I hope these data will aid in your quest for a good load in your rifle, and as previously stated: Start with lower charges of powder, and work up.
Good luck, JLS

AtkinsonBack when I used to play with the Chatfield Taylors in 375 and 416 I found the medium burners got the best velocity...H4895, 4064, and the like...Didn't have RL-15 then but its burning rate is about right.

NBHunterI started my Rel15 load with the 72gr charge for a Speer 350gr. Usually if I don't have data for a particular weight bullet I start with the charge for that powder and a heavier bullet. Unfortunatly (or maybe not) I have been too busy hunting to try it out over the screens. What velocity should I expect with the 24" barrel and 350gr loads?

bearhunt'rProbably 2,420 to 2,520 f.p.s. Would like to know what you find out when you do.
