Tried searching and couldn't find info, so could someone please give me the summary on when Barnes switched from flat nose to round nose solids in the .416? Also, how severe were feeding problems with the flat nose?

And what configuration of Barnes solid did Remington use in their factory loaded ammo?

Might have a line on some decently priced ammo and seeing if it's really worth it.

Not sure on the date of switchover, but the feeding issues are very subjective. My 375 fed everything, flat or not. I think the switch was bout the time the ATF gave the brass bullet folks trouble, maybe 5-6 years ago?

What Baxter said. Those flat noses Barnes solid fed perfectly in three different rifles of mine.

As recently as two years ago I was able to get the flat nose solids from Barnes directly as a special order item. If you really want them, call and ask.

Thanks guys. Not set on the Barnes, just didn't want to pass up a deal. Ammo I found is round nose, would prefer flat nose, so gonna just order some CEB for the Model 70 .416 Rem Mag I have on the way.

I shot onecwith a 416 Rigby Improved, and recovered the bullet.

The following year Inwas huntingbwith a 375.

So I took that recovered bullet, and turned it down on my lathe to 375, and killed another elephant with it.

Sadly, it whizzed straight through a side brain shot, of it might have killed a third one too if it was not too damaged.

Good idea.
CEB BBW#13 nose profile, in brass, ought to be tops.
I would have to go look at the CEB site on the .416-cal bullet weights.

BTW, that .458/450-grain CEB Safari Solid feeds very nicely in my WinCzechster .458 Win.Mag. with 3.4" box.
I might even try it at 3.345" COL.

Anyone who claims the .458 Winchester Magnum is ineffective has either not tried one, or is suffering from .458 Winchester Magnum Derangement Syndrome.

Don't think I want to hot rod the .416....Not that brave.

The .416 CEB are 400 grain. Need to get some ordered.

I like the CEB, I wish they would put a fillet in front of the first band though like Barnes does.

CEB Safari Solids are excellent for straight, deep, penetration on dangerous game. The shape and 67% meplat were thoroughly tested on dozens of cape and water buffalo. They called it the #13 test bullet. I have used them in .375 on buffalo. They work perfectly. Aim at the heart and the CEB Solid goes through the heart. Others I know, swear by the CE Raptor as well, on Cape Buffalo.

When I was playing around with my 416 Rigby, I just used the case trim die set up and filed the bullets flat like this. I think they finished at 391 gr IIRC.

Once I got the hang of it I actually used a disc on a Dremmel to get most of the brass off and finished with a file. I butchered only one bullet while getting the set up to work.

Never tried it on any game though.

The Remington's I have bought all had round nose Barnes solid. Knocked a large Ellie silly with the first shot and finished off 3 buff 1 charging) without complaint.

heeler, don't forget to try some Northfork's.
I did quite a lot of testing in 2016 pre safari and the NF's hands down provide the lowest Standard Deviation's thus leading to the best accuracy. That being said I don't know if it makes that much difference at 50 yards out of a big bore. The northfork's really performed well for me on Dangerous and Plains game.

I do have the North Forks on the list to try in the future.

I field tested the North Fork flat nose solid for Mike when he owned North Fork, I think they still use that bullet as does GS Customs and Ive use their flat nose solid, they all worked in my guns...Its a good idea to test them, if they don't feed have a competent gun smith fix them..

All that said my favorite bullet is the cup point by North Fork, penetrates like any solid and expands just enough to do big time internal damage..If I was restricted to one bullet for DG that would be my choice.
