.500/.416 Reloading Data
Any of the reloading manuals list reloading data for the .500/.416 NE? All the manuals I have pre-date the cartridge.

Thanks, JJS

While we are on the subject, anyone out there reload for this caliber and have any recommendations on loads?

As between the A-Square manual and Barnes manual, which of the two has better info on the .500/.416?

I have a copy of data published by Krieghoff for this round at a time when they lost their supplier.

PM me with a fax # or address and I could fax or mail you a copy of it.

Still haven't figured out how to scan documents for e-mail.

The A Square round and the 500/416 NE are not exactly the same thing. Close but no cigar. You could probably use starting loads but be careful of max load info.

416 Rimmed (A Square)

case length: 3.300
rim dia: .665
rim thickness: .060
base to shoulder: 2.735
base to base of neck: 2.862
COL: 4.100

416/500 NE:

case length: 3.242
rim dia: .644
rim thickness: .040
base to shoulder: 2.390
base to base of neck: 2.565
COL: (factory round) 3.980

That is from "Any Shot You Want" and a copy of the CIP drawing for the 416/500 round dated 05/09/98.

Sorry but I don't have water capacity. The Barnes data I have is for the blue coated bullets (XLC) and should be reduced substantially for conventional jacketed bullets or solids.

The neck on the A Square round is .438 long and the 416/500 NE is .677 (on a shorter case with a smaller base diameter) so capacity should be somewhat less. This is supported by the fact that each achieves 2400 fps with 400 gr bullets but the A Square does it with less pressure (38,400 in the A-Square; 45,700 in the 416/500 NE).

Does Barnes including loading data for the cartridge in its 3rd Edition manual?

Yes it does... that the edition I used to notify you....third edition is the latest version..I think

Only one load is listed with Barnes 400grain XLC bullets, H-1000 starting load 98grains, max. load 103grains, Federal GM 215M Primers, case is Rigby...velocity listed from 2150fps to 2300fps...but I am sure Barnes would give you this information if you call them or e-mail...as sometimes I make typos!!!
