I've seen some reference to this cartridge. What size bolt face is necessary for this one... Will it work and feed out of an '06 action? What about cases, who makes them.. Any feed back on the ballistics? How does it compare to the 9.3x62?

you are in the right place to ask about the 376 steyr.

1: yes, it will work in an '06 action, with the boltface properly opened (mine's .510)

3: it matches (jsut barely) the 375 hh FACTORY /classic laods.

mine get 2900+ with 225gr and 2500+ with 300 grain... these aren't loaded to what LOOKS as hot as 3756 factory loads, and I am pretty pleased with mine...

Please visit http://www.steyrscout.org/376steyr.htm for more information. The head diameter is .496" and the case is derived from the 9.3x64 Brenneke case, slightly shortened and necked up. Hornady makes the cases and loaded ammo in 270 and 225-grain flavors, and Hornady and RCBS make dies. I made up 300-grain handloads with Woodleigh SP Protected Points at 2320 fps out of the .376 Steyr Scout's 19" barrel.

My SBS Prohunter in .376 Steyr just loves 270 grain Winchester Failsafes and BL-C 2 powder. Varget works well also. Can't wait to try the 260 grain Nosler Accubond.
Decent punch in a midsized package.
Use Redding dies.
No need to buy factory ammo. Load your own with premium bullets.

In my opinion the .376 Steyr is a modern version to the 9.3X62. I want to use mine on a Cape buff hunt in '05. The factory loads are a bit too soft for that, so my plan is to use the 300 grain North Fork bullet.

Will 376 fit in a montana 1999 short action. I see that the overall length of the 376 is 3.11 and the mag length of the 1999 is 3.125 do you think it would take much work to get it to fit and feed??

I think that this would be an EASY fit, but call Dan and ask him if it can open to 3.15 or 3.2 (best)

CDNN has factory ammo for $23.95 a box if you want to try it on varmints. The 225's make a real mess.

If you are going to build a rifle in an '06 length action, the 375 Taylor is a better choice than the 376 Styer, IMHO.

for ~8 hr h2o, and AT LEAST $100 more for dies, the steyr is the best bang for the buck...

say your smith doesn't have either reamer... 376 is 85 bucks from midway... 150 for a custom

376 brass can be had nearly every day, headstamped

375 taylor is 3.50 each

there IS factory ammo for the steyr

the only feeding mod will be boltface (sameas taylor) about 10 seconds on the ramp, and NO change to the rails...

in fact, the 2 are so close in performance (like a 300 win and 300 hh) the only choice cost of accessories....

1. 376 brass is $22 for 50 at midway and 338 win brass is $14.

2. Run a 338 Win reamer into a 375 barrel blank, throat and you are done. This is why 375 Taylor reamers are rare...you use a 338 winnie to make the chamber.

3. Neck up a 338 case to 375 and you are done. Better yet, just seat a 375 boat tail directly into a 338 case and you are done.

4. Want factory ammo? Just pull a 338 Win bullet and stuff in a 375 not more than 20 grs heavier, and you are done. Do this with Federal or Hornady High energy/heavymag rounds and you will duplicate the 375 RUM factory loads.

it's a great round, but for the headache (we are talking headstamped brass, dies, reamer) it aint, to ME worth the effort...

sides, it wouldn't fit into a mexican mauser (like my 376 does)


throating, to me, is a pain.. and a chacne to make an error (i make lots of errors)

If we could petition Midway into carrying the Steyr in their $100 Adams & Bennett line! It would certainly fill a gap for us shadetree gunsmiths with 98 actions.

I'd buy one if they were the same contour and length as the 458s.
