475GuyIf you want to make a "whisper" out of the 458 Win Mag, then get a 45ACP bullet around 180 gr and paper-patch it and use a fast burning powder. I did that a long time ago with some 180 cast swc, put in about 4 gr Bullseye and tamped it down with a couple squares of tp. Before each shot, I just raised the rifle straight up and very slowly lowered it so as the powder wouldn't all be laying on it's side. It was pretty good for urban varmint control. Of course, it would never shoot to poa.

Virginia CreeperThe 458 Wisper is based on the 460 Weatherby case. It is a bigger case head size than the 458 Winchester.

458 Whisper is based on the 458 Win Mag case.
The 500 Whisper is based on the big Wby case.

Idaho Sharpshooter475guy,
try using thin (like 3/8ths thick) slices of the crinkle cell foam florists sell in lieu of other fillers. The foam wad weighs about .05grains and thus has zero ejecta mass. It vaporizes on ignition. Most of the top Schuetzen shooters are using it the past 15 years.

Here I was..thinking that the .50 whisper was made from the .338Lapua originally..but ofcouse....a 460 weatherby without a belt..should do the same....but what I`ve been reading the .338Lapua case is so much stronger and better to transform to a .50 whisper..that it is the preffered case...hit me with a hammer if I am wrong..

OK, you asked for it!

338 Lapua has NOTHING to do with the 500 Whisper. It is based on the 460 Wby case, with the belt intact. Look in the 10th ed. of C.O.T.W., pages 264 and 269.

jimatcatlater this summer i'll have the opportunity to do some 1000 yd shooting.... i have a .300 win mag, m70 26" shilen and a .300 rem ultra mag, also a m70... the 458 whisper caught my eye as i was looking thru the cartridges of the world book.... with the vld bullets, it claimed good accuracy to the 1000 yd mark.... ive got a ruger #1 .458 win mag, plenty of time, so i thought i'd investigate.....

I have done a "little" 1000yard shooting, I would stick to the 300 Mags.
Another Question, what scopes do you have on the 300's. Do you know if you have enough "UP" to go to 1000 yds?

Bill CooleyThe 458 Whisper was designed by J. D. Jones in 1993. This chambering uses shortened 458 Win Mag cases with a custom 600-grain VLD bullets. The intent was to create a hard hitting sub sonic round with superior penetration.
The 500 Whisper is another J.D. Jones cartridge based on the shortened 460 Weatherby with VLD bullets that weighed from 650 to 750 and even a 900gr.
The 510 Whisper s based on the 338 Lapua case shortened to 1.1875.
I went back to check in Cartridges of the world to see if I was remerging correctly and found another Whisper cartridge that is interesting because it is based on the 577 NE case cut down to 2 inches. It is called the 14.5 Whisper. I think it is a waste of good cases.

Bill
jimatcat,

Thanks.
50 Whisper not 500 Whisper?
Just a quick glance at pictures there makes it look like :
1) 50 Whisper: 460 Wby case head
2) .510 Whisper: .338 Lapua or .416 Rigby case head, either would work
They are tricky with their copyrighted names. Love that 50 Peacekeeper too.

Maybe the .458 WinMag with the same VLD bullets would be a better 1000-yard cartridge than the .458 Whisper, and better than Quigley's 45-120-500 3.25" . Certainly so if the .458 WinMag had proper throat for the bullet.

The original .458 WinMag has a long and sloppy throat that is a wide cone-of-a-leade about 1" long before getting down to land diameter. It ought to handle any bullet as far as seating goes, but accuracy in the sloppy funnel throat ??? ... and the twist???
Chubby Checker time.
Now for another Whisper-type cartridge:
.395 Mouse FartBased on the 30-06 shortened to 1.058" and necked down to .395. Suitable for cast bullet loads, even the VLD's. Easily silenced.

jimatcatas far as scopes, i have a pentax 18x.... im looking for a 24x.... i'd also like to find a unertl or lyman 16 or 24 to put to use....i'll cast the chamber and cone of my ruger #1 to see how much throat ive got....

ranb40I shoot the 300, 338, 510 whispers and the 458 socom. I usually just use M33 surplus bullets in the 510. I am experimenting with cast bullets, but can not get anything smaller than a 4" groups at 100 yards so far. Best accuracy is with the Amax bullet.
I had to take the lead weights out of the AR15 buffer to get it to eject completely when using 500 grain cast subsonic. I still get the occasional malfunction though. The 535 grain bullets might work better, but are rather long.
