4 bore video

BiggestGun4 bore video
Hopefully this come out. It was taken a couple years ago but I have been unable(unsmart enough) to post it. Thanks to my friend KENNETH1 for help with posting.
The gun is supposed to look like the one in the picture of Fredrick Selous. It weighed only 12 lbs at the time of the video. The load was 500 grs of Pyrodex under the 2000 gr bullet. I knew it was an overload but just had to know.

HarryOuch. My partner sold three 4 bores at a Tulsa show a number of years ago. Biggest I ever shot was an 8 with a 1125 grain slug. That was all I wanted to enjoy!

BiggestGunThat shot took me by surprise. 100 grains gives almost no recoil, 200 is not bad either. 300 grs is a nice plinking load. 400 grs is getting stiff but you can hang on to the gun. At the 500-gr shot everything went numb and if there had been a buffalo then I would have lost interest in him after that. My shoulder was badly bruised as well as my ego. I won’t fire that load again and would not let anyone else do it. I don’t think it would hurt the gun however.
The project started when I noticed that Krieger built barrel blanks for the 4 bore. We threaded it for a breach and tang. I used an old Springfield percussion lock I had laying around. The gun came out way too light and have since added 5 mercury tubes, four to the butt and one in the forend, to add weight. Now I am working on mercury filed collapsible ramrod to add some more.
The bullet mould was built from a piece of barrel, a trick I learned from the cannon shooters. The bullet fits the rifling closely so it must be lightly cleaned between shots.
There is a gentleman in town who has a 4 bore and now a 2 bore. I’m getting jealous and always promised myself a 1 lb’er if and when I could find a barrel. Now an outfit in Oregon is making them but I haven’t ordered one yet. Maybe I’m chicken.
I will post some pictures of the beast when it is actually finished and looking pretty.

Well, if you had used the standard old Hawken load in the thing, it would have been 1,000 grains of powder-1/2 the weight of the ball....... "Course, that's a round ball load, and in that 4-bore, the ball would ONLY weigh 1750 grains, not 2000! And the lighter ball would only require 875 grains of powder.

Mike ScottA rifled 8 bore is a lot more "practical" for a big gun. But the 4 bore is more fun and "practical" has nothing to do with it.
