Frame sizes on SxS Rifles?
I was wondering, how wide a range is there on the frame size for different NE cal's?

577 NE, 500 NE, 450 NE, 450/400 NE, 303 Brit.

I read that "20ga" frame size is used on some of the newer guns, regardless of chambering. But the Brits, scaled the frame to the chambering.

If it is not to much troble, I would like to know what some of your SxS frames measure across the face. (and cal.)

Thanks,

Hog Killer

No one is presently using 20 ga. actions that I know of...

You could use a 20 ga. sized rifle action for a 450-400 and under...I think that will be a future project of Butch Searcys, and I have an order in for one, when and if that comes about.

I think Merkel uses a 20 ga. action for their rifles.

If you have ever picked up a Brit .303 DR you will see why one size does not fit all. Each cartidge size needs it's own action size.

It's okay, I'm used to it. I was visiting friends in Pretoria one time. I always stay with them for a few days when in RSA. They had a new door mat waiting for me.

It said, Oh no, not you again.

Marrakai,

Thanks for going to the trouble of measuring your Wilkes.

I went to your story via the link. A very nice rifle and a great looking water Buff.

Some makers have gone to a lot of trouble in the past to get the weight and handling qualities 'just right'. For example, I have a .400 Jeffery 'Maharajah Gun' with the prowling tigers engraving, which is identical in every respect to a .333 Jeffery double I nearly bought, except that the action is about 3mm wider! This is not obvious to the eye, but can be measured of course. Both guns are 24-inch barrel, 10 lb even!

The liveliness of these Jeffery doubles is simply marvellous! Attention to detail, and a refusal to cut corners, is what truly sets the better British makers apart IMHO.

I'll measure the .400 too when I get the chance, HogKiller, unfortunately the .333 is long gone.
