At the NRA show yesterday, I stopped by the CZ booth to check out some of the new stocks of the CZ 550's. They had a new 505 Gibbs there with a nice american walnut stock, but I was horified to find out that the rifle had no cross bolts, although it was glass bedded. Also, at the tang, the wood stock was cracked, so I assume that this was a demo and it was shot some. The marketing guru said the basic rifle was $2100-2200 as a base, so from here you build-on with special features. My guess is that it would take another $1200-1500 to get it ready for africa at the least. At approx $4000, it may not be such a deal.

I started another thread on this same gun right here .....I, too, am not impressed with this gun.....not even close.

The CZ definately needs work as it comes from the factry,but even with additional cost it is still a farily inexpensive way to get a functional 505

except for the razor thin edge on the bolt... talk about a 2K piece of junk.

I was at Cabels's today and looked over a .505 Gibbs. I can't say I liked anything about the rifle except the caliber. I beleive they were asking $2,300 for the rifle.

I suspect we may see a few of these rifle used in the near future.

load 600 grain solid and soft at 2500 fps for 8300 fp of energy.

Before the CZ came along the 505's started at about 6 or 7K.

C'mon Will......You've seen the CZ 505 Gibbs haven't you?.....would you own (and use for DG) one for any amount of money?

A piece of crap is a piece of crap no matter the price.

I've had look at one the CZs in .505 and guess what. It was a piece of crap!

Of course Will is more than emotionally involved with CZ isn't he?

Hey, I'm not man enough to shoot a Gibbs. I have only seen them and have no idea whether they work, which to me is the bottom line.

This piling on just reminds of the countless threads where folks were cussing Winchester quality while in the same breath complained about the price! Where is Winchester now?

If one thinks that the CZ is a piece if crap, so what? Don't buy it.

If you don't want a CZ Gibbs, go get one built. Why complain about CZ? Seems to me that some want a $10K Gibbs for $2K, and are mad at CZ because they can't get it.

There is only one CZ rifle that I have bought that is in its original configuration. I just modify them to suit me. I'd probably do the same to the Gibbs.

The way things are going in Kansas the quarter probably shoild have had a couple queers on it doing whatever queers do.

I own over a dozen CZ 550's, and I have compared them to other rifles I own, like the Prechtl-actioned SIGARMS Mauser Banner Magnum 98, a Dakota 76 African, etc.

The CZ's can be as good as you make them, except in the case of the .505 Gibbs, it will take some special effort.

The action (bolt face and box) is just not big enough to handle the 0.640" Gibbs case head and rim. Aye, it is long enough, but not wide enough.

But neither is the Prechtl or Dakota.

Some fancy work is needed for any 0.700" bolt diameter with a Rigby sized box to handle the .505 Gibbs.

Maybe that is why they only made about 35 of the original rifles on Magnum Mauser actions?

GMA or bigger action?

Anyway the CZ rifle could be worked to do it if any Magnum Mauser with .700" bolt could. It is a strong action, that will handle anything that the Prechtl or Dakota will.

Out of the box, the CZ 550 Safari Classic in .505 Gibbs is a joke, or just a starting point for major re-do.
