As explained he simply stepped back onto a stone and lost his balance. Ron has shot my .470 double multiple times and he handles and shoots it very well. That was well before the video you linked was produced.

Looks to me like he had the gun positioned properly and he's learned some of the fundamentals but wasn't leaning into it far enough. With a proper stance you should not be able to move the gun or shooter more than a inch or so when you grab the rifle and push hard back at the shooter suddenly( mimicking recoil). His feet should never move under extreme recoil!!!! He stepped back because his feet and upper body wasn't positioned properly and slipped on the rock. This is a common problem. You think your doing everything right but your not! There are a few other things I saw him doing which were not correct but nothing serious.

At least he kept the gun off the ground.

We cannot see what was behind him, I would almost say this was made to look like it came out.

I like Ron. I have forgotten which mag he writes for but he showed his honesty when working with both a 25/06 and 7mm-08 in an article. He got off the phone with his wife and after being sidetracked by the call he proceded to load the 25/06 with a 7mm-08 shell took aim and fired. The shot missed the paper and he realized what he had done when ejected the almost straight walled case. It did no harm to the gun.

Properly held a big bore with a steel butt is very shootable, held improperly no recoil pad is going to help...A good friend of mine sez a recoil pad only gives a gun a one inch run at your shoulder, I believe that. most of my big bores have had leathe covered Silvers pads or checkered steel butt plates, one is as hard as the other..A gun balances better with steel butt plate. but to each his own on such subjects..

Late addition: thought Id add to the above. Sighting in from the bench use a strap on shoulder pad, use a bench rest that sucks up recoil but be careful here as some will sure split a stock..Use a stand up bench is the best rest. Even nailing a 2x4 to a big post works well enough..Actually the most effective recoil reducer is a brake, hands down they work, some scream noise, but all guns make noise, noise cand be handled better than pain, use ear protection at the range, and ear plugs on a string when hunting, let your guide and tag alongs use the God given ear protection called fingers!!

Maybe this is not comparable, but 500 S&W revolver is much more easy to shoot with hard wood grips instead of factory rubber. Just let the recoil flow through your body. Don't know how to explain, just be a spring and damper, not a stiff brick to be crushed.

Stand upright, feet shoulder width apart, hold the rifle tight into the shoulder with both hands and your cheek and let the rifle recoil upward. You won't have to step backwards and won't fall, even with a .458.
