GeorgeSJT,
I can heartily recommend Leupold's Vari-X III (I have not used the newer model).

viperidaeHow does it headspace?

prof242Fantastic! What weight are the bullets you are using? And...as an afterthought...are you sure you shouldn't be using something bigger?

JTknivesmost of the time i shoot cast bullets that are paper patched and thy are 500grs. but i do load 750gr hornady A-Max bullets as well but thy are so expensive i dont play with them much.

JTknivesI am wondering what you guys think would be a good bullet for this round. Im not hunting DG right now so thats not needed. The largest thing I would hunt would be moose or maybe a buff if I was lucky. For now its elk and antelope so I was looking at the 450gr Woodleigh SN in .510cal. the problem is i shoot alot of paper patched cast bullets and i have noticed that sometimes i can blow through the paper-patch and loose accuracy. so for plinking its not a problem but not something i need when hunting. with 450grs i could hit 2400fps easy in my 18" barrel and at range i would be in the 1800-2200fps window thy recommend. any ideas? thanks

GrandpasezJT -How long is your case. Neat name, did you
name it Razorback. Bret and friends in MN
and surrounding areas made a 2" version from
Rem Ultramag brass a while ago, the 375 I think,
and called it the .500 RAM. Head spaced like yours on the
mouth and extractor. There are a couple dozen guns out
there. And now the recent B&Ms on here. Ed

PhatmanHi JT,
Use a wad under the bullet like the black powder guys do.
It will save your paper patch.

sroseWhat kind of velocity are you getting with 750 military bullets?
12 December 2011, 20:06
RobgunbuilderJT- Use a 0.10 Polyethylene wad under your PP bullet. That solves the burn through problem. Bevel and sharpen a case and use it as a wad cutter. Poke the wads out through the primer hole with a rod. Polyethylene sheet is available nearly everywhere.
I still don't like your headspacing method. One of these days you'll have a problem.
To address your original question though, buy a nightforce scope. Trust me I'm tried everything on the big bores and for a long range scope nothing will outlast a Nightforce. For short range, the leupold compacts hold up nut for what you want, you will be bucks ahead to buy a good nightforce and badger rings.-Rob

JTknivesI was not the one that designed the case. a friend of mine designed it and he chambered my barrel for me. if there was a way i could get around headspacing on the mouth i would gladly be open to ideas. its posable i could open the bolt face up and use a larger case that uses a belt. any ideas

RobgunbuilderJT- try necking a .600ok case to .510. More capacity and a belt to headspace from plus a shoulder. You set the neck anyway you want. We tried it as an unlimited .510 cartridge and it was accurate enough at 1000 yrds but could not get the velocity we wanted to buck the wind with 850gr Boreriders. For what your doing it would be perfect. You can name it whatever you want, we never did enough with it for any claims. Just trying to help!-Rob

FOOBARFar out, JT...far out.
There are many good cases with belts or slightly larger in base OD that have been/could be trimmed/necked down/blown out to form a nice shoulder...Rigby, Gibbs, but as soon as you go there, many have already done it...my 510 Makatak, 500Mbogo, 500 AR, 500 AHR to name a few.
You can always use a rimmed case and turn the rim to a smaller OD similar to 444 Marlin case and still have a fairly well feeding and extracting cartridge...or just shoot single shot.
AmmoGuide has many listed. The Rigby case is popular and easy to either fix the bolt face or turn down the rim...ala 500 Jeff...500 AccRel is in that mix...Michael458 has several...headspacing on the mouth works well as long as you keep the case length right.
Cool name and it certainly fits well.
