HunterJim.416 Barnes
I received an email query from Africa on the .416 Barnes -- the .45-70 necked down to handle the .416" bullet.
Is anyone out there using one? Or have any information about field use?

jeffeossoChadd might be having my make one.. It's a pretty tame round, 400 at like 2100+.. will kill anything, though... When I win the AR buff raffle, i'll be redoing the 45/70 to that for me...
here's a link to some load data
http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/w416barnes.htmlI would, if/when I get around to it, mill 5 grains off the nose, making a HUGE meplate.

HunterJimGuys,
I went over to the Marlintalk forums and did a search there, and got some basic stuff in return. I am sneaking up on beartooth -- I have read some basic "stoff" on the site, but not posted anything there yet.
I almost hesitate to post this, but hey we do have noisy threads here from time to time.

The gent in Africa who mailed me is a very experienced PH who wants to try a (gasp)lever gun as a general purpose rifle. He is considering having a .416 Barnes built, probably on a Marlin M1895.

Dave JamesJim he realy!!! needs to talk to Marshall at bearthooth, the round hasn't gone far due to some problems,he would be better off with the 450/50 Alaskan I think.
I don't remember who but some one over there took the 450marlin and necked it down to 416 to get close to the barnes

Rusty GunnRuss... I don't rightly know, but I think he may have used Hawk bullets, as well as some cast bullets he used in another 40 cal levergun.
Post at the big bore forum at MarlinTalk, I'm sure he'll share the info.

Rusty GunnAccording to COTW, the 416 Barnes shoots a 400 grain bullet to 2155 fps, in a Marlin.
Another wildcat that would indeed set my world on fire, but as of yet uncreated/undeveloped to my knowledge, would be a "416-110 DRC" (assuming Dave Clay would create it). Necking the 50-110 case to this diameter would certainly push the speed up some. ~~~Suluuq

DB BillIf the 416 Barnes is a necked down 45/70 and can drive a 400gr bullet to 2155fps in a Marlin then the 45/70 also can....right? That's 4120 ftlbs of muzzle energy.
The .416/45-70 would give you a little more range but....why a PH need a long-range rifle?
