To the range w/ my 416 Taylor...finally! Trajectory anyone?

I got my 416 Taylor out of the shop recently....I know I need to post pics and will work on that. Am going to brave the COLD and take it to the range in the morning. I loaded 400 grain Hornady RN using data from Ken Waters Pet Loads and from AR pages using 69.5 gr. RL15, expected velocity is in the 2300 fps area. Am planning on shooting for group at 100 yards with scope, then at 50 with irons to check sight regulation. If I sight it 2" high at 100yds what is the midrange trajectory? Where does it hit dead on, and so on to about 300 yards? I know that is WAY past DGR range, but might get a chance to try it out on a hog in a wheat pasture, that would be too much fun for someone who cant afford a trip to SA.

....How cold was it ??.,. Have you chronographed the load....I don,t have a Hornady manual ..,., Heck go find a flat field and set up a bunch of targets 50 yards away from each other .,.,That would be alot of fun ...,.,.,

gumboot, I am at work now, started working night shift last month, and am going after work at 0630 hrs. It will be about 32 degrees f., I left my chrono at home?!*&%, I need to get an idea of sight reg. on the irons, shot it at the shop and it was hitting high, will need to replace front sight. Was hoping someone was still up and had trajectory info for it. The range has a 300 meter targets, but was wondering how much drop to expect.

..........@ 2300 fps if your 2 "high at 100 yards you will be probably a foot low @ 200 and prob 3 ' low @ 300 yrds ...At 300 yrds I would try useing the bottom duplex post where it comes to a point for the cross hairs as my aim post for 300 ...If you want a great general purpose bullet check out the lighter weight GS Custom HV bullets ....They should fly like a VLD ...

Ok, its 30 degrees out now and I am going to chicken out....I can sit all day in a stand in this weather, but dont wanna sit on cold concrete under a tin roof. Besides it will give me a chance to get my chrono, I really want to use it, so I wont have to go back and see what velocities I have.

---------Or another way to look at it the 416 Taylor has about the same amount of punch at 800 yrds as the 50 Special revolver cartridge does @ the muzzel .....Thanks Canuck

No, that was a cut/paste...but it did take about 20 minutes to internet search the BC of the 300gr Hornady RN bullet, get all the variables loaded in Pointblank, fiddle around with zero distance until I found one that resulted in a 2" high POI at 100yds, print-screen, copy to paint, crop, save as jpg, upload to photobucket and post photo, then save Pointblank output to text, copy text, and paste here. Phew.

Canuck, thanks a lot for the info, been away and havent been online since my range session.

I got to the range, was about 40 degrees F with about a 10 mph south wind making for some sad range time. Not sure what the windchill was but it was TOUGH. The good news was I had the place to myself, except for a guy who brought a sks out which promtly jammed and he left.

I fired 21 rounds, the first observation is that I shouldnt have left the chrono out in the truck all night; it was too cold for it and wouldnt work at all. I looked over the manual, such as it is, and it said to stay home when it is cold and drink hot buttered rum and teach the little lady to reload...yeah, thats gonna happen!

The next thing I noticed is I need a good recoil pad badly! The rifle started life as a 7mm rem mag and still has a small hard pad which I gotta get changed.

The smallest load at 100 yards was about 1 1/2 inch, with 76 grains of 3031. I tried some RL 15, but my shoulder was geting tired and I needed some different targets, it ran about 2-3 inches.

My next run I will leave the chrono in the house until time to go the range. I plan on different targets and some more RL-15 loads, and will try some log range loads.

Try a Limbsaver pad. I have this on my 416 T, 9.3X74R and 450/400.

I use two past pads and a standing bench to shoot my 416s.I put a milk crate and a 60 pound bull bag on the crate.I shoot standing and push with my left hand.It lets you roll with the recoil.I learned this from Reading Elmer Keith.He was not a big man but could shoot the biggest guns.I have shot my 416s up to 125 times with reduced loads with no brusies or flinching.It takes time to learn.Try speer 350 mag tips at about 2400 fps it will kick alot less than the 400 gr bullets.I also shoot my 416s at 200 yards.

........76 gr of 3031 seems like a very stout load if its with 400 gr bullets....But it seems to be pretty accurate .......How did the brass look ..,., Am very interested in what the chronograph says when you get some better Wx....,.,Our range here is oriented in such a way that it is a wind funnel

...@ 20 deg F and a 10 knt breeze .,.,practice takes on a whole new meaning ......A fast cheep temp solution to the recoil delima is an inexpensive rubber slip on pad .....I,ve found they work great for checking out different lengths of pull and making 458 Lotts funner to shoot.......I got one for 10 bucks last year and it gets lots of use ..........I hunt with a pack on most of the time of heavy clothing and so keep my lop short but the slip on helps balance things out for range sessions ...

Gumboot, I am at work again and need to check my notes, but I think it is 76 grains of 3031. I got the load from Ken Waters Pet Loads and it is with the 400 grain interlock.

dgr416, I am gonna try the standing bench, I will probably need 2 milk crates at the public range I use, but I think I can make it happen. I have several Keith books, enjoy them all, and quote him often.

Dave, salute from TEXAS, I have hunted in central Missouri in 12 degrees and snow, but no wind and I was dressed for it. The combo of the wind, humidity, temp, my clothes and that I was tired made it a dreary session. A friend of mine was stationed in Nebraska and had things to say about the cold there...nothing good!! Stay warm.
