Hope for a .470 from Ruger
Gents: I got a reply from Ruger to my letter urging them to chamber the No. 1 Tropical in .470 Nitro Express. Linda DeProfio wrote back to say that Ruger has had several requests recently for a rifle in this caliber, and that all suggestions, whether by letter or phone, are passed on to the sales manager, who reviews and sorts them out for discussion at monthly sales and planning meetings. She said, "It is letters like yours, from the field, that are most interesting to Sturm, Ruger & Company."
I strongly urge any of you who have any interest in seeing Ruger make a run of .470 NE Tropicals to consider sending Ruger a brief note. Their address is: Sturm, Ruger & Co., Lacey Place, Southport, CT 06890. I believe that continued attention to requests for a factory No. 1 470 would put these guns in our hands.

If I didn't already have one, I would write them a letter. Thanks to Hamilton Bowen, I have one.

My letter is in the mail. I suggested they start with the 470, then the 500 if sales are good. I feel certain they could easily sell a limited run of both calibers.

I think Ruger could sell a limited run of No1s chambered for the 470NE, and 500NE, and the two new H&H chamberings, added to the chamberings already made in the Tropical!

I for one would buy a 500NE, a 470NE, and a 400H&H, in a heartbeat, at $1000 each, IF they added a real recoil pad! [Cool]

Mac is right. They need real recoil pads and
for no more than it would take do up heavy calibers from the Lott on up, put in a recoil
reducer. They would sell thousands, not limited runs,Thousands!!Ed.

Mac, Ed, please share your thoughts on this with Ruger. Mac, I second the motion on a Decellerator or some sort of improved recoil pad. This is the first thing I do when I get a tropical: have the smith replace the pad.

True, brittish big bore requires a brittish style recoil pad like silvers. Most important: It must be RED

I would like to see a line with more classic camberings...

I still like the 450/400 option better, but I'll write.

Ive never realy been a Ruger fan ,but if they came out with a .470 or better still some form of .500 ,then I think I would add JUST ONE LAST GUN to the cabinet.

OldSarge: When Ruger finds out how much interest there is in their new .470 NE Tropical, they'll be much more pliable about adding a .450-400!

Question is, why do we have to write them at all?
If I was a gun manufacturer I'd mandate "AR" as daily reading for my staff.

If they would make them I would buy a 470 immediately!I have always hoped they would make this.

Back in the mid 90s a local gunshop owner was trying to get Ruger to make these. He had 20 orders lined up (including mine)with money in hand. While Ruger considered doing it then, the idea was canned because (we were told) with the long, rimmed 470 case there was a tendancy for the ejected case to get hung up on the lip of the sliding tang safty. I can see where this may be an issue, but I would still want one!

FWIW...Just sent mine with interest in 470 NE & 500 NE (3") with recessed safety, red decelerator, oval cheekpiece and color-cased receiver! We can wish for anything...doesn't mean we'll get it ...but it gives Ruger a view into what is of interest.

The factory safety is a "cover their A$$" part. It is made that way so that you cannot eject cases back into your eye while the gun is shouldered. I have heard some people mill down the front end of the safety a little to allow the cases to slide by. However, on a rimmed case, the only solution is a recessed safety button, which is what the origional design should have had anyway. Even if they charged as much as Bowen to add this to the custom calibers, it would be well worth it.

Welcome to the real world:

If they decided to go into production tomarrow it would still be 5 years before one hit the market and I'll probably be done for by then! [Wink]

Howsomever, I suspect it will never come about because the market is not there in real life, not many of us...
