Wayne Jacobson came through here on his way to the show in Dallas. He had a .600 OK with him so we ran out to the range this morning to give it a try. It was a 10.5 pound gun with an 18.5 inch barrel. We put the brake on and gave it a go at some jugs. I will tell you that I was amazed out how effective the brake was. The load was a 900 grain Woodleigh. It was only running about 2000 fps according to Wayne and it was a joy to shoot. No normally constituted hunter (with the possible exception of Terry Wieland) would be bothered by it in the slightest. You did good. It's a heck of a cartridge!

I've been curious, the 600OK has been interesting, but I always see them with brakes installed.

Dave- Thanks! Its always nice to hear from folks who give it a try! It has indeed worked out extremely well. 35 years of real Big bore experience went into its design. Wayne also does a great job building them! All the MYTHS about it being unshootable are simply the figments of the imagination of those who cant shoot and/or dont know how!
As for shooting it without a break. NO PROBLEM if you know what your doing. They screw off you know! Why anyone whould want an extra 50% of recoil for a perceived noise reduction never ceases to amaze me, but to each his own. If you dont like breaks maybe the .600NE Heym is the gun for you? Ha Ha! Again the Brake screws off and the recoil at 2000fps is actually pretty mild. At 2400 fps you better have REALLY good technique though or you'll be sorry!
Try my 750gr conical super penetrators for amazing speed( 2750 fps) and penetration. The perceived recoil is dramatically reduced too. Even Terry weewee Wieland could "probably" shoot that load.-Rob

I figured that a 2200 fps load would be just about right. The brake has ben a problem with some PH's and some don't want them around, so a removable brake is a real plus. As long as it isn't one of SafariKids productions, I would imagine it being quite shootable (that boy is truly insensitive to recoil).

No problem without the brake on an AHR-built 11lb (it's either 10.5 or 11 pounds -can't remember right now) 600 Overkill shooting 900grain bullets at between 2200 and 2300fps.

Did a lot of that before my safari just to see how it felt.

2000fps is really a piece of cake.

The brake is amazingly effective though!

As far as PH and muzzle brakes - I guess each has his own rules. I asked ours about it and he said "No problem". My pop was shooting his 585AHR and I wanted him to use the brake.

Now 750grain RGB bullets at 2,500fps are simply a joy to shoot!

Dave, Did you see my 700 AHR? Wayne is bringing it to Dallas for his booth.

Wayne came in on New Years Eve and stayed at a motel here with his family. Don't know if you have met them or not but he has a lovely wife and two really neat kids. My wife and I and my buddy and his wife met them for breakfast. His wife took off for the Mall with the kids to do some shopping and Wayne, my buddy and I ran out to the range to shoot the .600. It was a pretty quick trip. We have a lot of snow here and it was really cold with a snappy north wind so we didn't linger long. Just shot some jugs.

To be honest, I was really more interested in a .585 AHR but Wayne said he tries to steer guys to the .600. I guess he only has 200 or so more pieces of brass for the .585.

I want to see your .700 when I come back that way in March.

We are in Bentonville Arkansas tonight, paying homage at the alter of Walmart. We will be going deeper into the Ozarks tomorrow for a three day stay. I will probably come out dressed in full cammo and sporting a Mullet. If I here Banjos, I'm outta there!!

Wayne, I hope you manage to fine some warmer weather!

Woke up to snow this morning. Can't seem to get away from it.

Wayne, I have the cap for the barrel when the brake is taken off. I'll drop by with it Thursday afternoon.
