470 Capstick

Well it occured to me today that in order to complete the rifle I'm building, I need to buy a barrel. I'm working on a P17 and want a barrel chambered for the .470 capstick, preferably 24" and of a heavy contour. What twist should I use if I'm going to be using mostly 500-600 grain slugs? What manufacturer would be the best for a tube like this? Thanks for any help!

When Art Alphin designed the cartridge, he designed it for a 1:10 twist. Art believed (and I agree) that a quick twist stabilizes bullets better for entry to a game animal, leading to less bullet deflection and deeper penetration. There have been 470 capsticks built with a twist as slow as 1:20 but I would definitely not recommend it.

Lothar Walther makes excellent barrels and I understand that they were providing A-Square with barrels and can get you the 1:10 twist barrel that you need. McGowen also makes them. And Pac-Nor.

I am having mine done right now at Pacnor, and to keep 500 happy it is 1 in 10

. I wanted stainless and a fast twist so when I did ny research the options were Pacnor or Lothar short of having to pay extra for a special set up. If cromoly is an option (which I am guessing it is) the least expensive route is Bauska. When I checked a year or so ago they have the correct button and I think the price was right around $100 (wayyyy cheaper than pacnor and lothar, like less than half). I have one a Bauska barrel on my 458wm and like it.

Never heard of Bauska Barrels....Got a web site address??

Thanks for the information gents. I've only heard of Bauska barrels but never had a chance to really work to any, or to my knowlege! I might have to give them a try, if all else fails than go with a Lothar, chrome moly. Right now I've got my templates down for engraving the action, so here in a month I'm hoping to be able to throw the barrel on.

Bauska Barrels does not have a website to the best of my knowledge. He is an irascible old curmudgeon who only got electricity to run his lathe and mill.
Up in Montana, 406-752-7706. Best deal is to call on Saturday morning and talk with Steve. He got his start "freshening" out barrels for the mountain men!

470 Mbogo

I would be careful about a heavy contoured barrel. It would probably be in your best interest to get a barrel that will balance your rifle leaving you with an overall weight of approx. ten pounds. A 470 Capstick would be fine to shoot at this weight and you will end up with a more usable rifle.
